PAGODES DE COS

2014 du Château Cos d'Estournel Saint Estèphe

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
ABV 13%

55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot. Quite a focussed nose of dark crisp fruit and a leafy tobacco edge. In the palate this is beautifully polished, a sophisticated feel, nicely perfumed, good spice and cinnamon dusting to the nicely ripened fruit in the middle. A lovely pretty shape has a savoury push of gently building grip on the finish. Succulent and leaves you wanting more. Rating: 90 L&S (Apr 2015)

The 2014 Les Pagodes de Cos has a loose-knit bouquet, slightly richer in style than its peers with hints of fig infusing the black cherry and boysenberry fruit. I found this slightly “confit” in style. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, good acidity and demonstrating better balance than the aromatics imply. I appreciate the weight in the mouth, the spicy, white pepper vein towards the finish...it just needs more finesse to develop. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2019 - 2028 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2018)

Bright healthy deep crimson. Very well balanced and charming – the fruit almost hides the inky tannins. Correct and slightly stony on the end but no great concentration. Drinking range: 2023 - 2033 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

The 2014 Les Pagodes de Cos is racy and voluptuous from the outset. Dark stone fruit, chocolate, menthol, licorice and dark spices run through this succulent, textured Saint-Estèphe. The interplay of dense flavors from the dehydration of fruit by warm days and anticyclonic winds resulted in an unusually opulent second wine, made in a flamboyant, exotic style that is found in some wines of the northern Médoc in 2014. Drinking range: 2019 - 2039 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Feb 2017)
