Pale greenish straw for the first time in this tasting! Light and fresh – real hedgerow character. A little sweet on the front palate. A tad sweet and sour. Shame because the texture and freshness are admirable. Drinking range: 2022 - 2026 Rating: 16 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jul 2021)

Good warm start in the vineyard with bud burst relatively early into April. No frost and successful flowering early July. Good ripeness on the fruit from a warm August and September. Chardonnay was the star.

35% Chardonnay, 34% Pinot Noir, 31% Pinot Meunier DOSAGE - 8g/l LEES AGEING - 60 months DISGORGED - January 2020 100% MALOLACTIC

Whole bunch pressed and naturally settled for 24-36 hours. First in stainless steel tanks, second in bottle with champagne yeast.

Pale straw in colour with a lovely fine mousse, this wine reflects the raw energy of our terroir. On the nose it is beautifully fresh and clean, with crisp green apple followed by underlying notes of summer meadows with freshly baked bread. On the palate, a wonderful freshness with an initial impact of white peach and pink grapefruit. This is followed by a rich intensity of orchard fruits and a long clean ripe fruit finish. This wine is really crisp and fresh, so perfect as an aperitif, served with shellfish or a bowl of salted almonds.

Winemaker's notes (Aug 2021)

Squerryes

‘Licet Esse Beatis’: it is permitted to be joyful. This motto, that adorns the doorway to the Squerryes Estate, could not be more fitting of the wines.

From this corner of the North Downs, often overlooked in winemaking with the more famous South Downs stealing the limelight, the Warde family first noticed the potential in the estate and planted vines here in 2006. A geological survey had confirmed that the chalk escarpment had qualities similar to the esteemed 'Côte des Blancs' region of Champagne.

The only use their own grapes, and the base wines that are blended into the cuvée are aged for the lees for extended periods, creating incredible complexity in the wines.

The wines are extremely smart and beautifully complex, offering masses of autolytic layering with a gorgeous line of fresh acidity.
