2014 Weingut Braunewell
The estate's flagship Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from the brilliantly named Teufelspfad or 'Devil's Path' vineyard. Deep ruby, this impresses from the first - a lovely balance of ripe fruit and barrel development, quite full in the mid-palate and then fanning out with fine tannins and suave fruit flavours taking the lead. The finish is long and serene. L&S (May 2017)
*Case Price: Mix any 12 bottles of wine or buy 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits or Fortified (as a full pack) to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
François Breiniville fled 17th Century France's Huguenot persecution to settle in Essenheim, just south west of Mainz. It took until the 1960's for Adam Braunewell to start bottling the wines from his family's vineyards and, today, he helps his children and grandchildren run this excellent estate and tend their flagship vineyards of Blume and Teufelspfad (the Devil's path!)
From barely registering with wine drinkers outside Germany, Spätburgunder has suddenly become the must have filler for the discerning wine rack. As with all good Pinot Noirs, they are lighter brighter more charming red wines with elegance and style. Tuck into our tasty little quartet - three from the Braunewell family in the Rheinhessen and one super value from a little further south in the Rheinpfalz.
