The purity of fruit on the nose is perfection with cherries, crushed raspberries, mineral, pumice and citrus fruit. Dust, too. Full body. Powerful, chewy tannins. So long and muscular, yet polished and formed. Most structured Brunello I have ever had from here. A wine for decades. Try after 2022. Drinking range: 2022 - 2042 Rating: 100 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jan 2020)

Maturing mid to deep ruby with narrow bricky rim. At first there seems to be a tiny bit of oxidation with tobacco leaf and cut apple, but that lifts with aeration. Quite rich and with impressive depth, but swirling the glass releases a myriad aromas. Supple and suave cherry fruit and much more youthful on the palate with bags of polished tannins. Drinking range: 2020 - 2038 Rating: 17++ L&S (Jul 2025)

A remarkable nose of bright fruit - all red and zipping with a touch of sophisticated wood-spice leads to a generous, gorgeously textured palate. Loaded with red berries with real bite and even a lemony, bergamot note creeps in. Such freshness. And then some richer, softer, darker flesh builds weight and a svelte, sexy plumpness is perfectly tempered by softly polished, super-fine tannins. There is a feel of crushed rock dust and then that enveloping fruit wight comes back - all so perfectly underpinned by a juicy line of acidity. Wow, what balance! This is immediately delicious and is already hard to resist, yet it has everything in spades - perfect harmony and a very long, exciting life ahead for the patient.L&S (Feb 2020)

Fuligni is on a short list of the best wine estates in Montalcino. The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is fragrant and delicate, showing a level of precision and elegance that pushes the limits of this terrific vintage. The wine is fresh and buoyant with ample primary fruit and acidity to carry it over multiple decades of cellar aging. The bouquet reveals a slow succession of wild berry, rose, crushed flowers and graphite-like aromas with spice and licorice. The mouthfeel is structured, firm and built to last. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 95+ Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Oct 2020)

Fuligni

Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Roberto works closely with his strong team of Simone Bacconi as agronomist and Daniele Zeffirini as winemaker, with additional technical advice from Federico Ricci in the vineyards, and oenologist father and son Paolo and Jacopo Vagaggini. These are all kept under control by Daniela Perino, who runs the office and commercial side.

The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 14 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. Most of the land is in a strip on the eastern side of Montalcino, the classic and historical area for the production of Brunello, in localitá Cottimelli. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (14-40) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.

These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.

L&S's relationship with Roberto goes back to the mid-nineties. We have always loved the wines here, which combine the concentration and elegance of the best of Brunello. They can be drunk more or less from release, and are so perfectly balanced that they age beautifully. The 'Riserva' releases, made only in the best years, can reward cellaring for decades.
