BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO
2015 Riserva Fuligni
The Fuligni 2015 Brunello Riserva is a great wine and an impressive showing from this hot vintage. Featuring power and finesse, the nose offers mature blackberry, underbrush, crushed mint and licorice while the full-bodied palate doles out ripe raspberry, Morello cherry, licorice and tobacco alongside a backbone of taut, fine-grained tannins. It鈥檚 well balanced, with fresh acidity. Drink through 2030. Abv: 15% Drinking range: 2024 - 2030 Rating: 96 Kerin O'Keefe, kerinokeefe.com (Aug 2023)

This has a crazy nose of white truffles, wild berries, cherry blossoms, porcini mushrooms, earth, white pepper, sage, blueberries, cocoa and seashells. Full-bodied with such elegance and subtle power. Layered. Very fine, seamless tannins. Keeps going. Try after a year or two. Drinking range: 2024 - Rating: 100 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jun 2022)
This Brunello offers dark fruit flavors of black currant, blackberry, violet and iron. A steely line of tannins adds support and the supple texture ties it all together. Classy and complex, finishes with accents of tobacco and spice. Best from 2024 through 2045. Drinking range: 2024 - 2045 Rating: 96 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Apr 2021)
Fuligni gives us a truly special expression from this sunny and warm vintage. What I notice first in the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is the elegance of the aromas and those dusty, almost salty mineral notes of crushed limestone that frame the delicate fruit packed tight within. There are other distinctive aromas here, such as balsam herb, dried mint and powdered licorice root that add more layers to the bouquet. That layering continues to the palate where the wine excels on all fronts鈥攂alanced concentration, structure and freshness. This is a unique creation and a very precious wine. It is one of the stand outs of the year. Drinking range: 2024 - 2050 Rating: 98 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Dec 2020)
It鈥檚 hard to put down a glass of the 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. This youthfully restrained yet remarkably pretty wine trades power for undeniable elegance and refinement. It鈥檚 dark and moody at times, bright and focused on radiant fruits at others. Layer after layer of crushed black cherry, woodland herbs, autumnal spice, mint leaf, cedar box and earth resonate in the glass. Its silky textures coat all that they touch in a mix of dark red berries and salty minerals, turning dry and structured toward the close under an air of inner florals and earth tones. It will be some time before the 2015 is ready, but I hope to be able to revisit this when it is. Tasted twice with consistent results. Drinking range: 2026 - 2038 Rating: 95 Eric Guido, www.vinous.com (Nov 2020)
Fuligni
Founded in 1923 by Giovanni Fuligni, the estate today is co-owned by Robert Guerrini Fuligni and his delightful aunt Maria Flora Fuligni. Roberto works closely with his strong team of Simone Bacconi as agronomist and Daniele Zeffirini as winemaker, with additional technical advice from Federico Ricci in the vineyards, and oenologist father and son Paolo and Jacopo Vagaggini. These are all kept under control by Daniela Perino, who runs the office and commercial side.
The estate covers 100 hectares, of which 14 are under vine, almost all planted with Sangiovese, with a small amount of Merlot for the IGT blend. Most of the land is in a strip on the eastern side of Montalcino, the classic and historical area for the production of Brunello, in localit谩 Cottimelli. What is important is the combined height of the vineyards (350-440m), the density of planting, age of the vines (14-40) and the 'galestro' soils on which they are planted. Fuligni's wines have reached international recognition for their purity of expression, strong backbone of acidity and polished tannins.
These are simply the finest wines of Brunello, epitomising all that is great from the region. The 'Rosso' now comes from a defined part of the vineyard, on clay and tufa rather than the marl of the Brunello. It is made from the outset as a Rosso, with different clones and the intention to make a wine which will be approachable at a much younger age.
L&S's relationship with Roberto goes back to the mid-nineties. We have always loved the wines here, which combine the concentration and elegance of the best of Brunello. They can be drunk more or less from release, and are so perfectly balanced that they age beautifully. The 'Riserva' releases, made only in the best years, can reward cellaring for decades.
