Really delicious. Sweet ripe fruit, appetising freshness backed by good concentration. Long rich finish. We had a long tasting and visit with owner Pierre Taïx, tasting the three components - the rich fat Merlot from the plateau, the fresher more defined fruit of the Merlot on the hillside, and a magnificent cuvée of wonderfully expressive and pure Cabernet Franc, which, like at VCC, is what gives this wine it's real distinction this year. Pierre is one of the most thoughtful Bordeaux winemakers we know, proud to be independent of the influence of the big five oenology labs that advise nearly all the top estates. See the 2015 blog for more on his thoughts on the vintage which shed a different light on the style of the right bank wines. This wine will definitely be as good or better than his 2005, which, tasted recently, performed well above its pay grade. Very strongly recommended. Rating: 90-92 L&S (Apr 2016)

Rating: 16.5 (92) Jean-Marc Quarin (Apr 2016)

La Mauriane

La Mauriane is a small vineyard within Château Rigaud, a Puisseguin-St-Emilion property owned by Pierre Taïx, who owns a few other properties in Puisseguin and the neighbouring Côtes de Castillon. La Mauriane is a micro-cuvée, made by Pierre, who is a university lecturer (economics) in his other life. One of the three parcels that make this extraordinary wine consists of eighty year old vines planted by his grandfather. The vineyard here is farmed organically. 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon.
