2015 Petits Crais Domaine Huguenot

At the edge of the bottom of a combe, this is on a mostly clay soil with calcareous rubble washed down from the valley. Wines on these deeper soils can be more structured, take longer to 'get there', and can age longer too. Solid structure of fine tannins, all filling out the juicy, lively fruit. Here the tannin is more present, it's quite a chunky, solid style, but there is plenty of fruit here to go with it. Drinking range: 2020 - L&S (Nov 2016)

Quite a solid, chunky style, partly due to the predominance of clay soil, interspersed with calcareous rocks, this has plenty of dark fruit and concentration to age well. Cask sample. Cranberry and redcurrant fruit - even a hint of rhubarb here. Tart but not too sharp. In fact, there is a silky tannic structure that provides nice texture by contrast. Petits Crais. In the north part so going into Marsannay and sandy marls...marl with the texture of the sand. Late harvest. Ripe red fruits. This is juicy and has a bite at the end of the palate. It is a touch more rustic than the Marsannay. It has a some grip on the finish. A bit more austere. “A good wine to have with hare,” thought Jerome and Laurent. The Huguenots can trace their history in Marsannay and working in the vines back to 1789. Currently the domaine is run by Philippe. His father Jean-Louis expanded the domaine from five to twenty-two hectares (twelve in Marsannay, six in Fixin, and four in Gevrey) before handing over the reins. Philippe has taken the bold step of taking all twenty-two hectares into organic production (the conversion was completed in 2010).
