GRAHAM

2015 Stone Terraces

EN PRIMEUR

Impressive stuff - this is powerful. Lovely svelte nose dark fruit and crunchy plum skin lead to a broad, but not fat middle. Savoury too - there's leather, some chocolate - good raisiny pulp and some lovely soft dark berry juice. Serious, more four-square and broad-shouldered than the others - but is it as charming? Certainly a wow - but perhas less joyous at this price level than others?L&S (Aug 2017)

Flattering, with a gorgeous and showy display of warm plum sauce, blueberry reduction and chocolate-covered açaí berry flavors rushing forth. Light milk chocolate and black licorice notes check in through the finish, which is juicy and open in feel. Best from 2028 through 2040. 400 cases made.— Drinking range: 2028 - 2040 Rating: 96 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Oct 2017)

A wine from three small plots of vineyard in a narrow curving valley on the Malvedos estate. None of the plots faces south which proved advantageous in a hot, dry year like 2015. Very low yields: less than 1kg per vine. Wonderfully aromatic (reflecting the high percentage of Touriga Nacional) with a classic floral character but closing in on itself after a couple of days; soft, rich and opulent on the palate with broad-structured tannins building in the mouth and leading to a ripe, complete finish. Very accomplished wine. Just 400 cases produced. Rating: 18.5 Richard Mayson, www.richardmayson.com  (Sep 2017)

One of the westernmost Symington properties, therefore coolish but in 2015 it was really, really dry. Made from a 2.9-ha steep vineyard at Malvedos facing east and north, and a tiny part facing west, in one of the hottest bits of Malvedos right down by the river. 820 g fruit per vine from single-row terraces. Mainly Touriga Nacional. Picked 12 and 13 September, earlier than most Symington 2015s. This is only the second Stone Terraces made – the first one was 2011. (There won’t be a Graham's 2015.) Just 400 cases made (2% of Malvedos production). Hand picked. This is the first port to carry a Royal Warrant since Dow’s had one a century ago. Aromatic. Rich and pruny nose. Strongly, florally aromatic with a fine line of freshness through it. Almost refined on the finish! Very long and elegant.
