The single-vineyard 2015 K4 was sourced from a plot planted in Ábalos in 1950 at 660 meters in altitude. It's mostly Tempranillo with 12% Graciano aged in 600-liter foudres for 12 months. This is a darker, more powerful red, with some spicy and smoky aromas, hints of coal and licorice. This is a vineyard that did not suffer from hail in 2015, so it was harvested later than the ones that did. The palate is a lot lighter, finer and more elegant than expected, with sharp acidity and fine-grained, slightly dusty tannins. Drinking range: 2018 - 2027 Rating: 92 Luis Gutierrez, www.robertparker.com (Feb 2018)

Dense, smoky nose. Very rich and tannic, but surprisingly well balanced. A big wine. Drink now. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Jul 2017)

It is spectacular spot. From a single plot in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria, which absorbs the nutrients from a chalky clay soil with rock fragments which have broken away from the mountain and which breathes the Atlantic climate of the district. We make our most personal wine. Its hallmark: its stringent four-phase selection process of vineyard, vine, cluster and berries. Traditional destemmed fermentation method. A vineyard planted in 1950, 75% Tempranillo, 25% Graciano, grown at 650 metres above sea level on chalky clay with rock fragments. Winemaker's notes (Mar 2016)

Artuke

These wines from Rioja are rooted firmly in their terroir. Artuke is all about small scale, biodynamic production: twenty two hectares of vines spread over thirty two plots between the stunning, hilly villages of Baños de Ebro and Abalos on the upper terrace of the river Ebro in La Rioja Alta, Northern Spain. Artuke is run by the family of Miguel Blanco, who have been working the land in this Northern part of Rioja Alavesa for over a century. Now, the helm is taken by Miguel's two sons Arturo and Kike de Miguel which as you might guess, is where the name 'Artuke' is derived from. The aim of the brothers has been this: To create a new and individual wine which still respects the history of the wine region and of their family wine tradition. The result: A thoroughly modern style of Rioja, but not heavily extracted or heavily wooded in style.
