LA 50/50

2015 Domaine Anne Gros et Jean-Paul Tollot

Grapes Cinsault, Grenache, Carignan
Colour Red
Origin France, Languedoc-Roussillon
District IGP Côtes de Brian
ABV 14%

Hailing from organic vineyards planted just north of Carcassonne, this is a blend of Carignan from 100-year-old vines, with Grenache and Cinsault. A savoury nose with vibrant cherry notes leads to a black-fruited palate with black pepper spice. Medium-bodied and with grippy tannins, this is a versatile food wine Julie Sheppard, Imbibe Magazine (Oct 2017)

Bringing Burgundian winemaking flair to the Minervois region (Côtes du Brian is an IGP, aka Vin de Pays, Minervois), Anne Gros of the eponymous Vosne Romanée domaine and her partner Jean-Paul Tollot of Domaine Tollot-Beaut produce wines that are true to their grape varieties and to their cooler than average terroir, but with a clarity and elegance not often associated with the region. The dark, finely textured blend of Cinsault, Grenache and Carignan (50/50 simply refers to the two partners) has violet, plum, black fruit and a little minerally graphite on the nose and a pure, fresh, crunchy palate of blackcurrant, tapenade and black pepper flavours. Rating: 90 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Oct 2017)

Vineyards are located in Cazelles, just north of Carcassonne and in the shadow of the Montagne Noir, in the hills where temperatures are cooler and terroir varied. The higher elevation—interestingly, the exact same elevation as in Vosne-Romanée—allows for grapes to ripen slowly, preserving their natural acidity and keeping alcohol in the finished wines moderate. One particular highlight of the estate is a walled plot of 100-year-old Carignan vines. Vines are cared for according to “lutte raisonée” principles, following organic practices and avoiding chemical treatments as much as possible. Grapes are harvested by hand and fermented on indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled, stainless steel tanks. Wines are aged, depending on the cru, in a combination of tank and older French oak barrique. Winemaker's notes (Jul 2017)

Like all of Anne’s 2015s, the 2015 IGP Pays D'Hérault La 50 / 50 is downright inky colored and completely opaque. A blend of close to equal parts Syrah, Grenache and Carignan raised all in stainless steel, it offers notes of liquid blackberries, plums, peppery herbs and a hint of minerality. Clean, concentrated and yet elegant, with beautifully integrated acidity, drink it anytime over the coming 4-5 years. Domaine Anne Gros et Jean-Paul Tollot

Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot (Domaine Tollot-Beaut) have taken over some wonderful vineyards in the Minervois, and brought Burgundian savoir-faire to an area which all too often produces sweet or leaden-footed lumpen wines. These wines have a style of lively freshness which is so uncommon anywhere in Languedoc-Roussillon. We were bowled over by their drinkability, and feel they offer so much in terms of character and flavour, while remaining easy to approach, mineral and light of touch.
