Vineyard Les Chataigniers

The 2015 Pouilly-Fuisse Les Chataignieres lies just south of Macon Fuisse and comes from 60-year-old vines. It has a clean and precise bouquet, perhaps more so than the Pouilly Fuisse En France, light Mirabelle/yellow flower scents emerging with time. The palate is fresh on the entry with good salinity, well balanced, with the crisp bead of acidity counterbalancing the slightly honeyed/spicy note on the finish. With more persistence, I found this a little more cohesive than the En France. Drinking range: 2018 - 2028 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.robertparker.com (Sep 2017)

Almost sweet on the palate - this is flawlessly ripe yet retains enough savoury notes on the finish to be appetising and digestible. Leaves a lifted floral character to finish. Drinking range: 2017 - 2022 Rating: 17+ Richard Hemming - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jan 2017)

Discreet wood sets off a ripe nose of mild reduction and white orchard fruit that marries into very rich medium-bodied and naturally sweet flavors that display real volume before culminating in a slightly bitter and clipped finish that is probably due to the abundant gas. My predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt as Barraud almost never misses with this wine. 2019+ Rating: 89-91 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Dec 2016)

Domaine Daniel Barraud

Daniel and Martine Barraud's vineyards have been in the family since 1890 and with their son Julien now helping to run the domaine - they represent the fifth generation of the family to be making wine here. Most of their 8.5 hectares vines are in Vergisson and are mostly high up under the famous rock (Vergisson lies between the two dramatic cliffs of the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson).

The vineyards here are significantly higher than those of Fuissé, and consequently later-ripening, and the wines often have a more solid structure - but all Daniel's wines have their own character, from the Puligny-like directness of the La Roche to the fat, almost California-like 'en Buland', via the mineral force of the Crays.
