2015 Extra Brut Grand Cru Champagne Marc Hébrart

Grapes Chardonnay, Pinot Noir
Colour White
Origin France, Champagne
Classification Grand Cru
ABV 12.5%

50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir. Old mass-selection vines from four grand cru vineyards. Spontaneously fermented and aged in oak barrels with time on lees. More than 36 months sur lattes.
Peach blossom, and just gorgeous. Plump, succulent, nutty, almond butter and almond caramel. Smart and beautifully woven and quite seductive, but telescoped into elegance by super-fine bead and acidity. This has remarkable purity and intention. Whistle clean and spine-tinglingly fresh into a long, long, walnut and hazelnut finish. Superb.
Drinking range: 2024 - 2035 Rating: 17.5 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2024)

50% Chardonnay (Oiry, Chouilly, Avize) and 50% Pinot Noir (Aÿ, Grande Vallée de la Marne). The main part of the cuvée is vinified and aged in oak barrels, spontaneous fermentation, no filtration. No malo. Sur lattes for 72 months. Very golden. Waxy and tropical and frangipani, but with a forceful swag of rich, sour cream. This is very good. Concentrated, rich, distinctive and dramatic. Minty flair on the finish. Tarragon. And an earthiness. Lots here. A big change from the other Hébrart wines. Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 17 Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2023)

50% pinot noir from Aÿ; 50% chardonnay from old vines in Oiry, Chouilly and Avize; wild fermented; vinified and ages in barrels; unfiltered and unstabilised; 4g/L dosage of MCR; disgorged October 2022

I don't like oxidation, so the wine spends no more than six months in barrel, with no bâtonnage. The grapes were perfect on paper in 2015!' - Jean-Paul Hébrart

Thanks to his mandate of holding off for true ripeness, Jean-Paul Hébrart achieved perfectly ripe flavours in 2015, creating a generous, succulent and immediate Rive-Gauche Rive-Droite that bursts with ripe berry/cherry fruits of all kinds, balanced with the grapefruit and blood orange of ripe grand cru pinot noir. This is a strong release, holding freshness, persistence and integrity thanks to the chalk mineral backbone of lauded grand crus. Ready to impress from the outset.

Champagne Marc Hébrart

Marc Hébrart started making his own Champagne in 1962, and the domaine is now run by Jean-Paul, who took over in 1997. Jean-Paul tries to add to the family holdings every year, believing that even at current prices it's still a good long-term bet. He's currently running 16 hectares, 8 ha of Pinot in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Chardonnay in Oiry, Avize, Chouilly and Cramant, and more Pinot in Louvois and Aÿ - as well as the Clos le Léon in Dizy: in total 80 parcels in 11 villages.

The vineyards are farmed sustainably, with as little input as possible. Vinification is by parcel to give the widest possible palette when it comes to blending, and or course allowing for single-vineyard releases like the Clos Léon, a rare walled Clos in the village of Dizy. Most of the Champagnes are made in stainless steel, but since 2004 there has been a barrel-fermented cuvée which blends some of his Chardonnays on the Côte de Blancs with some of his best Pinot Noirs to the north of the Marne - 'Rive Droite-Rive Gauche'.
