SAFFREDI

2015 Le Pupille

Grapes Merlot, Cab Sauv, Petit Verdot
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
District Maremma
ABV 14%

The 2015 Saffredi is a powerful, racy wine. Even so, I don't find the nuance, clarity or freshness that made the 2015 so complete last year. Part or all of that may be attributable to multiple bottlings. My feeling on the subject is very simple. Multiple bottlings inevitably lead to bottle variation, and that is just unacceptable at this level. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 95 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2019)

Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Luxurious nose of concentrated cherry and fine oak notes. A hint of tobacco leaf potentially indicating it is already developing, perhaps an indication of the hot vintage? Intense sour-cherry fruit and bags of powdery tannins. Can be approached now. Drinking range: 2018 - 2024 Rating: 17 Walter Speller, www.jancisrobinson.com (May 2018)

The 2015 Saffredi is a sultry and velvety wine from the Tuscan Coast. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot that sees 18 months in new and neutral oak. The textural richness is of the highest caliber, and the bouquet produces a long succession of black fruit, exotic spice and savory tobacco flavors. There's a touch of mocha chocolate and toasted espresso bean as well. The wine delivers great length and power. It promises not only to age but to improve as it spends more years in the cellar. Some 30,000 bottles are made. Drinking range: 2018 - 2035 Rating: 96 Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (www.robertparker.com) (Nov 2017)

The spring and summer were worryingly dry, but some rain in August was timely, helping the grapes to ripen fully. The nose is gorgeous, with a lush oakiness and some welcome red fruits. The attack is rich and ripe, marrying immense concentration with good acidity. Despite ageing in 80% new barriques, the oak is not too evident. It's a bit monolithic now but also stylish and persistent, lifted and intense. Long, with great ageing potential. Drinking Window 2021 - 2040 Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 95 Stephen Brook, Decanter.com (Nov 2017)

Le Pupille

Le Pupille is located in the Maremma, in the South of Tuscany and the estate covers 75 hectares under the DOCG of Morellino di Scansano. Considered as the appellation's leading property, the estate produces eight wines with its most famous wine, Saffredi, launched in 1987 by owner Elisabetta Gepetti and consultant winemaker Giacomo Tachis. Elisabetta's belief in the quality of the vineyards of the Maremma and her determination to bring them to a wider audience has been instrumental in the emergence of both Morellino di Scansano as an appellation - with elevation to DOCG as recently as 2006 - and Le Pupille as an internationally-acclaimed winery.
