2016 Barale Fratelli
This is a darker style with a lovely wild, almost pungent nose, earthy, spicy, dark cherry, raspberry and tar fragrance. In the mouth the wine is bold and rich, dark fruits in the mid-palate, cherry, loganberry and plum, spicy, earthy and with rich mouthfilling tannins that lend structure and shape to this cracking wine. The 2016 Barolo Vendemmia is a very pretty wine with which to explore the vintage. Airy and weightless in feel, the 2016 is a bit nervous today. Crushed flowers, white pepper, dried cherry and mint are all very nicely lifted. The 2016 will be terrific once the tannins soften a bit. It is very nicely done. Barale traces its roots all the way back to 1870 when Barolo appeared on the scene in the Langhe, promoted by the Marchesi Falletti and Camillo Benso, Count of Cavour.
Francesco Barale, great-grandfather of the current owner, was among the pioneers in the production of Barolo. Today Sergio Barale and daughters Eleonora and Gloria carry on the old family tradition. The nineteenth-century manor house in the historic center of Barolo is the administrative and commercial headquarters of the company. Nearby are the historic underground cellars, where new technology has been introduced in accordance with traditional rules. The vinification and aging processes adopted are aimed at producing balanced wines in which the characteristics of the grape variety and region of origin prevail.
To some Barolo represents the very pinnacle of Italian wine. The majestic ethereal character appeals to the senses in a similar way to red Burgundy, even if the style of the wines is utterly different. This is the intense and seductive world of Nebbiolo, where solid tannins vie unexpectedly well with delicate fruit, and where age unwinds ever more complex flavours.
