2016 Dark Pearl Fleurieu Salomon Estate

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin Australia, South Australia
Village Fleurieu
ABV 14.5%

This Aussie red is a magnificent, skilful, ripe and smooth blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (90%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Merlot (5%) that broods over a core of molten dark black and red fruits – cassis, cherry and plum – all pinned to varietal mint and herb, plus a touch of leafiness and a suggestion of earthy fungi. Matured for 18 months in French barriques (mostly used), it’s long, supple, detailed and very persistent, proving the versatility of the blend. Bring on the slow-roasted lamb, venison and juniper casserole, classic roast leg of lamb with rosemary and anchovies or thyme and juniper rabbit. Downright delicious, brimming with flavour, fresh and bright with tannins and oak deftly balanced, it heartily suggests a second glass should be relished pronto. James Viner, Times of Tunbridge Wells (Mar 2022)

This is a little weedy, yet the cabernet delivers nice, fresh fruit and citrus undertones. Full body, but not too exaggerated with tannins. Drink now. Screw cap. Rating: 90 James Suckling, (Dec 2019)

Salomon Estate

Our great friends the fabulous Salomon family famous in Austria for the historic estate also have this sensational outpost in Australia - Salomon Estate. Here they make elegant Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Atop the rolling hills of the Finniss River wine-growing area the grapes ripen in an idyllic micro-climate. Finniss River extends along the southeast shoulder of the Adelaide Hills, part of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Salomon Estate wines mirror the unique qualities of this landscape: you can feel the midday sun in their fruits and the chilled air of the nearby Southern Ocean in their acids. These exceptional wines reflect the fruit of Australia with a European approach to winemaking. Bert, Gertrud, Fay Marie and young Bert Salomon bridge the old and the new wine world. Harvesting twice a year they commute between Finniss River/Australia and their famous white wine estate Salomon Undhof – Austria, which they manage in the eighth generation. Always one to make the right decisions at the right time, Bert is helped by iconic Australian winemaker Mike Farmilo, longtime friend and former chief red winemaker at Penfolds.
