A slightly oak-driven nose does nothing to prepare one for the translucent fruit on the palate. This has lovely freshness and lift, a good velvety, fine-tannined middle, and lively and ripe-tannined berry fruit on the finish. Drinking range: 2024 - 2040 Rating: 91-93 L&S (Apr 2017)

The 2016 Grand-Mayne has a refined, complex bouquet of intense red berry fruit, briar and undergrowth aromas plus wonderfully integrated oak. The palate is ripe on the entry with plush tannins, and perhaps a little more forward than its peers, yet there is plenty of charm on the lightly spiced, tertiary finish. This is Saint-Émilion with pedigree. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2022 - 2045 Rating: 93+ Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2020)

The 2016 Château Grand Mayne is a beauty and could turn into a real superstar with 3-4 years of bottle age. This deep ruby-colored effort gives up lots of currant and cassis fruits as well as subtle new oak in its violet and mineral-driven aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, with fine tannins and impeccable balance, it’s seriously impressive. Give it a few years and it should keep for two decades or more. Drinking range: 2019 - 2039 Rating: 93+ Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Grand Mayne has turned out beautifully. Fresh, perfumed and nuanced, the 2016 is super-appealing. Sweet red berry, blood orange, mint and flowers add energy to an expressive Saint-Émilion that is texturally rich and also vibrant. I really like the sheer energy of the 2016. This is a wine of real character. Drinking range: 2022 - 2041 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Château Grand Mayne

A mayne is a large house surrounded by an estate, something which adequately describes Château Grand Mayne, the “grand” bit presumably referring to a time when the estate ran to 250ha with 62ha of vineyard. This was after the Laveau family, who owned Grand Mayne for two and half centuries at least, had purchased Château Soutard to add to their domain. It wasn’t to last, and gradually the estate was divided and sold off and now amounts to 21ha, 1.5km from St Emilion village at the foot of the plateau. Since 1934, Château Grand Mayne has been owned by the Nony family. The vineyards are planted with 76% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and are around 30 years old. Of the non-classified estates of St Emilion, Château Grand Mayne is generally accounted as one of the best.
