CHÂTEAU LA CLOTTE

2016 Grand Cru Classé Saint Emilion

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
Classification Grand Cru Classé

85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc. All the Ausone 'stable' showed dry yet rich purple to black fruit, very dense and pure, with good lively acidity, and this is no exception, although it starts with a warmer ripeness, fleshy and sweet black fruit, very ripe with intensity building. Again it seems quite a simple profile, but the power is there, and it leaves an impression of sloes and almost Barolo-like tannin feel, full of flavour. Drinking range: 2027 - 2045 Rating: 91-93 L&S (Apr 2017)

An estate purchase by the team at Ausone in 2014, the 2016 Château La Clotte is a brilliant wine that delivers everything you could want from this vintage. Made from 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, its deep purple color is followed by a medium to full-bodied, classic Saint-Emilion that has ultra-fine tannins, terrific balance, and a beautiful perfume of flowers, toasted bread, graphite, cassis, and black raspberries. Seemingly all about finesse and elegance, with flawless purity of fruit, it still packs plenty of intensity and length. It surpasses the 2015 and has 20-25 years of prime drinking ahead of it. Drinking range: 2019 - 2044 Rating: 95 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 La Clotte is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc this year, picked on 12 October for the Merlot and 17 October for both Cabernets. Matured in 85% new oak, it has a fragrant bouquet with plenty of redcurrant, wild strawberry and rose petal notes, real gusto here but also elegance. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a beautiful line of acidity, great substance and fine mineralité on the finish. La Clotte was in a poor state in terms of old and missing vines when the Vauthiers took over the property in 2014, but it is rapidly becoming one of their standout wines alongside Ausone. Superb. Drinking range: 2022 - 2045 Rating: 94-96 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Apr 2017)

Rich purple fruit notes. Very ripe. Sweet and rich. Could beguile and is very polished. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 16.5+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2017)
