CHÂTEAU LA CONSEILLANTE

2016 Pomerol

Grapes Merlot, Cab Franc
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Pomerol & Lalande de Pomerol
Village Pomerol
ABV 14%

80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc. The nose is very Merlot, lacking a bit of edge, but the palate is a complete 'délice', rounded and ultimately supple, creamily fresh, densely fruit flavoured. Creamy tannins really all stuffed with delicious ripe fruit flavour. Tannins that are very present but incredibly fine. A gorgeously balanced and hedonistic mouthful. Drinking range: 2025 - 2040 Rating: 93-94 L&S (Apr 2017)

Bursting with Pomerol character, cocoa bean, slate, olive, powerful liquorice and crushed mint leaf alongside blackberry, raspberry puree and succulent black cherry fruits. Tannins make their presence felt but have a sense of enjoyment and seduction, and this is pretty much the perfect combination of concentration, nuance and promise. Harvest September 22 to October 17 last date of harvest, 39.5hl/h yield. 70% new oak, 30% one year old barrels. Drinking range: 2026 - 2042 Rating: 98 Jane Anson, Decanter (Nov 2021)

The 2016 La Conseillante comes across ripe and generous on a nose of strawberry, blackberry, rose petal and vanilla, before more tertiary and nobler scents develop. The palate is well balanced with supple tannins and fine acidity. This is disarmingly fleshy, almost corpulent, with impressive depth, though it tightens up toward the finish. Its grace and class still come through, however. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2024 - 2055 Rating: 95+ Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2020)

Bottled in June of 2018, the 2016 Château La Conseillante is a beautifully seamless yet powerful version of this cuvée that has the hallmark fragrance and elegance of the estate front and center. Complex blackberries, cassis, flowers, incense, forest floor, and floral notes all soar from this full-bodied, pure, and polished Pomerol that has an undeniable class as well as wonderful purity of fruit, perfect integration of its tannins and acidity, and a blockbuster finish. It's an incredibly complete wine that flirts with perfection and will keep for 30-40 years. The blend is 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, aged in 70% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. There are less than 4,000 cases made, but this is a wine you want in your cellar. Drinking range: 2019 - 2059 Rating: 99 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

Château La Conseillante

Château la Conseillante’s origins lay in an estate called Domaine de Mautretat that was broken up in the early years of the 18th Century with reverend gentleman called M. Léglise purchasing the part that became Château l’Evangile whilst Catherine Conseillan took the other. In 1871 Château la Conseillante was bought by the Nicolas family who own it to this day. With only the addition of a small plot of vines in 2014, the estate has remained the same ever since. The 12ha of vineyard are planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. The vineyards border Petrus to the north, and one can gaze across l’Evangile and see the vines of Château Cheval Blanc. Indeed, a small part of la Conseillante’s vineyard strays across into St Emilion, but is included in the main Pomerol cuvée. Château la Conseillante is a well-executed balancing act marrying tradition with modernity, something exemplified by the new cellar that opened in 2012.
