CHÂTEAU PHÉLAN SÉGUR

2016 Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel Saint Estèphe

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
Classification Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel
ABV 14%

Dark and very brooding on the nose. This doesn't have the pretty, bouncy, juicy fruit you find in so many other 2016s. It has a tight, dense, cool fruit core. The tannins are ripe but they seem to envelop the fruit rather than carry it forward leaving a slightly drying finish. This is dense, sculptural wine. More Michelangelo's David than Degas figurine. For the long term. Drinking range: 2028 - 2038 Rating: 89-91 L&S (Apr 2017)

An exceptional St Estèphe in this vintage, and one to seek out, not fully ready to drink today, but on its way. This has a tight structure, with creamy and succulent tannins, waves of black fruits, still young but you could fully dive in with a bit of clever carafing. One to get hold of. 70ha vineyard, owned by Philippe Van de Vyvere, director Veronique Dausse, consultants Michel Rolland and Julien Viaud. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 95 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2022)

Some wines are just about pure pleasure, and from the first glass you know that this is begging you to sit back, enjoy, and pour a glass for a friend. Not as long living as some of the other wines on this list, but it's a 2016 that shows the beauty of the vintage without having to wait another five years to enjoy. Cocoa bean, espresso and tar dominate on the first nose, then bristling blackcurrant fruits appear, with tension through the palate and a mouthwatering finish. 50% new oak. Drinking range: 2021 - 2040 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Nov 2021)

The 2016 Phélan-Ségur has a generous nose of pencil-lead-infused black fruit, plus touches of wild mint and damp earth/truffle aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with gritty tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It feels slightly pinched toward a finish that displays just a soupçon of dryness, but there is commendable persistence in situ. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting. Drinking range: 2021 - 2036 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Aug 2020)

Château Phélan Ségur

Château Phélan-Ségur is a Cru Bourgeois St. Estèphe property that produces textbook meaty, solid and long-lived St. Estèphes. It was bought by Xavier Gardinier in 1985 and is now run by his sons, Thierry and Laurent. Phélan-Ségur's 66 hectares of vineyards are well-sited near the Grionde estuary and lies on well drained gravel soils. The vineyards are bordered by those of Château Montrose and Château Calon-Ségur. Phélan-Ségur's wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Cabernet Franc (10%). The grapes are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and the wine is then matured in oak barriques (30% new) for 15 months. Phélan-Ségur usually requires at least 5-7 years of bottle ageing to show at its best and the best vintages can continue improving for up to 15 years.
