KUMEU RIVER

2016 Chardonnay Hunting Hill

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin New Zealand, North Island
ABV 13%
Vineyard Hunting Hill

The 2016 Hunting Hill Chardonnay feels a little muted on the nose at the moment, coming across very stony with scents of a cool alpine stream. The lightly spiced palate is well balanced with a rounded entry, good depth and perhaps a little botrytis that just takes the edge off of the finish. Drinking range: 2020 - 2040 Rating: 90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Feb 2019)

Michael Brajkovich, a Master of Wine, has been making world-class Chardonnays in Kumeu, Auckland for decades. Hunting Hill provides fruit for the Estate Chardonnay as well as for this single-vineyard bottling that is barrel fermented with indigenous yeasts and then matured for 11 months. The 2016 is floral-perfumed, waxy, intense and complex with a lingering, salty, mineral finish: a wine of great purity and freshness. Drink any time over the next six or so years. Rating: 93 The Wine Gang - www.thewinegang.com (Mar 2018)

The voluminous yet weightless 2016 Hunting Hill Chardonnay continues this bottling's successful run of vintages. Hints of roasted cashew accent tropical fruit, but thanks to a zesty line of citrusy acids, the wine powers forward without ever seeming overly broad or heavy. It simply coats the mouth with a stunning array of complex flavors, lingering gently on the finish. Drinking range: 2018 - 2027 Rating: 95 Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com (Feb 2018)

Vibrant, this offers a precise and intense laser beam of Meyer lemon, orange marmalade and tangerine flavors that are expressive and kept crisp by juicy acidity. Notes of green tea linger on the finish, with hints of citrus zest. Drink now. Drinking range: 2017 - Rating: 92 MaryAnn Worobiec, The Wine Spectator (Dec 2017)
