2016 Chardonnay

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin New Zealand, North Island
ABV 14%

The 2016 Estate Chardonnay has a touch more fatness on the nose than the 2017, though not quite the same degree of delineation. There is a subtle waxy/resin like note here, along with a hint of orange blossom and orange pith. The palate is well balanced with the same twist of sour lemon that marks the follow-up vintage, offering good weight in the mouth and a lovely peppery flourish on the persistent finish. Very fine, although I suspect the 2017 will have the edge in the long term. Drinking range: 2021 - 2038 Rating: 90-90 L&S (Feb 2019)

Smoky. Gun flint. Green apricots tucked into smoky oats. Angular and very very young. Not quite formed yet. Tarragon and salty and green apples. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 Rating: 16.5+ Tamlyn Currin - www.JancisRobinson.com(May 2018)

Still a Kiwi classic, Kumeu River's 2016 Estate Chardonnay features toasted grain aromas, ripe peach and nectarine flavors and a long, citrus-inflected finish. It's medium-bodied, with a plump, silky texture and up to a decade of aging potential. Drinking range: 2018 - 2025 Rating: 91 Joe Czerwinski, www.robertparker.com(Feb 2018)

A suburb of Auckland is the place to go for those seeking bargain alternatives to white burgundy, even if the Brajkovich family can no longer afford the land prices there for vineyard expansion and are extending into Hawke's Bay on the east coast. Their single-vineyard bottlings are even more concentrated and ageworthy. Jancis Robinson MW OBE - www.JancisRobinson.com(Dec 2017)

Fragrant, juicy and floral up front, with pretty notes of peppery white flowers that mingle with lime, white grapefruit and apple flavors, set on a crisp, linear body. Shows plenty of tension from the vibrant acidity and lingering minerality. Drink now. Drinking range: 2017 - Rating: 91-91 MaryAnn Worobiec, The Wine Spectator(Dec 2017)

An array of local sites blended together, this gives a heart and soul feel for the vintage at Kumeu. Plenty of richness and ripeness. Quite peachy and almost heads into mango tropical territory. A fleshy and approachable palate. Drink now. Rating: 92 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com(Nov 2017)
