A smoking good wine from an appellation that should get more recognition than it does, the 2016 Chenade offers a floral, medium to full-bodied style that carries loads of gravelly minerality as well as notes of black cherries, raspberries, spring flowers, and earth. With terrific purity and, again, a lovely floral quality, it’s a gorgeous red to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years. Drinking range: 2019 - 2034 Rating: 93 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 La Chenade offers a striking interplay of sweet red berry/plum fruit, blood orange, mint and exotic spice. Cabernet Franc aromatics are super-expressive in this pliant, mid-weight Lalande de Pomerol, with rose petal, star anise and savory herb overtones that emerge in the glass. La Chenade shows just how appealing 2016 is, even among humbler appellations. The 2016 is 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Drinking range: 2018 - 2026 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

The 2016 La Chenade, the Lalande de Pomerol from Denis Durantou, was bottled at the end of May 2018. It has a beautiful, well-defined bouquet that offers charming scents of wild strawberry, red currant and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with an almost Burgundian tannin profile. This La Chenade is silky in texture and perfectly balanced, revealing palpable mineralité at its core. A stupendous wine from Durantou that oozes class and will give at least a decade’s worth of drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2021 - 2036 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

La Chenade

One of the brightest stars of Pomerol is undoubtedly Denis Durantou of the highly acclaimed Château l’Eglise-Clinet. Thankfully this glory is not enough for Denis and he also has a smaller estate in the less esteemed Lalande de Pomerol. Here Denis' skill and experience can produce magnificent wines that are a fraction of the price. The property is Château les Cruzelles, where he makes both Les Cruzelles but also La Chenade, another Lalande-de-Pomerol cuvée from the younger vines. He was even making this with Cruzelles’ grapes before he bought the estate in 2000. We champion this wine every year on primeur as it represents such consistently good value for money. Beautiful Bordeaux wine at an incredibly fair price - a rare gem.
