MARQUIS DE CALON

2016 Saint Estèphe Château Calon Ségur

Grapes Cab Franc, Merlot, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Estèphe
ABV 14%

Second wine of Calon Segur. It has the addition, for the first time, of some 8-9 year old Cabernet vines, the first of successive waves of new plantings that are replacing Merlot. Like the grand vin, this has quite a dark fruit profile with blackberry, blueberry and black cherry dominating. There is an intriguing savoury edge too. On the palate it is remarkably refined for a second wine. The texture is seriously suave and there is some real creamy density to the fruit. Tighter and more focused than the Marquis has ever been before thanks to the young Cabernets, it shows just how good the Calon terroir is. Drinking range: 2022 - 2028 Rating: 90-91 L&S (Apr 2017)

The second wine of Château Calon-Ségur, the 2016 Marquis de Calon is a medium-bodied, soft, hard to resist effort that has plenty of sweet red and black fruits, some dried herb and spicy aromatics, moderate tannins, and a great finish. It shows the balance and purity of the vintage and is an outstanding Saint-Estephe to drink over the coming 10-15 years. This cuvée is a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, brought up in 30% new oak. Drinking range: 2019 - 2034 Rating: 91 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is just as gorgeous from bottle as it was from barrel. The high percentage of Merlot comes through beautifully in the wine's succulent, racy personality. Raspberry jam, mocha, white flowers, spice and blood orange all race through this succulent second wine from Calon Ségur. Best of all, the 2016 will be ready to drink upon release. Tasted three times. Drinking range: 2019 - 2031 Rating: 93 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a blend of 55% Merlot and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon matured in 30% new oak, bottled in June 2018. It has a delightful bouquet of blackberry, boysenberry and tobacco aromas; hints of dark chocolate emerge with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a lively, energetic opening. This is well balanced and nicely poised, displaying a fine bead of acidity, and it feels long in the mouth. A deeply impressive second wine from Calon-Ségur that should give a decade of drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2021 - 2032 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Château Calon Ségur

St Estèphe Troisième cru 1855 Château Calon Ségur is the northernmost Grand Cru estate classified in 1855, sitting just north of the village of St Estèphe. It was once part, as the name suggests, of the vast holdings of the Ségur family, owners amongst others of Lafite and Latour. In the 18th Century, Nicolas-Alexandre Ségur is said to have remarked "I make my wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is in Calon", and the label bears his heart to this day. In the early years of the 19th Century, the then owner Etienne Dumoulin became interested in an underdeveloped part of the estate, which was cleared and planted with vines. Such was the quality that the rump of Calon-Ségur was sold off, and Etienne's new estate went on to become Château Montrose. Calon-Ségur came into the hands of the Gasqueton family in 1894, and it is still owned by the family. A solid performer, especially recently, the Grand Vin is made with a relatively high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon (as high as 90% in some vintages). The vineyards are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc and the wines spend 18 months in wood. The second wine is Marquis de Calon.
