Harvested at 35HL/HA. Tasted from Cask. Serious. Straight. Tightly furled for now, but impressive. Lots of grip and scrape - but at the back lots of lovely, well matured fruit. Petals too, this needs plenty of time. Young, but impressive. L&S (Oct 2017)

(from vines planted in 1972 and raised in ~60% new oak). A very ripe nose offers up notes of violet and plum liqueur aromas that are trimmed in noticeable menthol and oak elements. Markedly bigger and more powerful flavors are muscular to the point of being overtly robust and are shaped by very firm if notably less refined tannins on the palate staining and impressively long finale. This will not win any awards for refinement but then again, elegance isn’t why one buys the wines of Les Naugues in the first place. This too is excellent but note well that patience is absolutely required. 2026+ Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Oct 2018)

The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Les Naugues is the star of Raquillet's portfolio this year, bursting from the glass with a thrilling bouquet of smoky cassis, plums, cherries, subtle grilled meat and rich soil. On the palate, it's full-bodied, supple and fine-grained, with lovely energy and textural elegance, displaying superb concentration and depth. This shone from barrel, and it shines just as brightly from bottle. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 94 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jul 2018)

Cask sample. Muted nose, which gives more black fruit than red (especially compared with their other premiers crus). Very fine tannins, bright acidity, decent length. For those who like Gevrey-Chambertin… and a bargain! Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 17 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Feb 2018)

Domaine François Raquillet

François took over the running of this estate from his father, Jean, in 1990, with his wife Emmanuelle. Records show that the same family have made wine in Mercurey since the 1600s, and Francois is the eleventh generation.

With eleven hectares under vine, François has substantially reduced yields, introduced higher quality oak barrels (up to 50% new wood for the Premiers Crus) and significantly increased the quality of wines made at this domaine. François explains he tries to avoid over-extraction at all costs - his one aim is to deliver the beautifully pure fruit profile he gets out of the old vines - this he does with great success. It is a wonderfully transparent style - combined with good mid-palate weight.
