Vineyard Charmes

Good intensity on the nose, well ripened strawberries and red berries, follows to the palate. Sleek powerful flow. Pretty tannins, really quite sophisticated. Powerful yet not hefty - this just drives on through the palate. Impressive density, but slides there effortlessly, lovely Charmes smoothness. A ripeness and sleekness to the power. L&S (Oct 2017)

(from 50+ year old vines). This is the first wine to display any appreciable amount of reduction on the lightly oaked nose. Otherwise the round, supple and refined medium-bodied flavors that offer very good intensity on the firm but not austere finale. As is usually the case, this is a Morey 1er of finesse and grace. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 90-93 Allen Meadows, (Jan 2018)

(vinified with 70% whole clusters): Moderately saturated medium red. Musky, soil-driven scents of strawberry, raspberry, mocha, underbrush and leather lifted by spicy high notes. A juicy, classic, very expressive style of Morey-Saint-Denis with enticing sweetness and considerable charm, not to mention a pleasing light touch. Finishes with a fine dusting of tannins. Lignier told me he carried out a green harvest in all of his Morey premier cru vineyards owing to the full crop loads but still produced an average of 46 hectoliters per hectare. Drinking range: 2021 - 2028 Rating: 90 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2018)

The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Aux Charmes has 50% whole bunch in the blend. It has a very composed bouquet with blackberry, graphite and undergrowth scents that gain vigor in the glass yet maintain Morey typicity. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chalky tannin, vibrant black fruit with just a hint of red cherry, fresh and tensile with impressive precision and focus on the finish. Very fine. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 91-93 Neal Martin, (Dec 2017)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
