This similar profile to Cheseaux, but more minerality starts popping out in the palate. good, stony clean peps punctuate the mid palate. A touch saline - working hand in hand with the nicely shaped red and black fruit, there's an underlying slick ripeness and depth, complex and satisfying. This vineyard is limestone mixed with some softer Marne. L&S (Oct 2017)

The 2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Faconnières 1er Cru has an engaging and complex bouquet: red berry fruit, touches of Chinese tea and brown spices all well defined. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, and a little chewy in the middle. It becomes fleshier towards the finish with a gentle grip. Whether it is a long-term prospect is another question - it needs more grip and substance to convince me of that and in fact, those develop with aeration. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2019)

(from 60+ year old vines). A background application of wood frames notably ripe yet still very fresh aromas of plum liqueur, violet, lavender and a pretty array of spice wisps. This too is overtly muscular with excellent power and drive characterizing the more mineral-driven flavors that exhibit superb persistence on the balanced finish. This will need to develop more depth to merit the upper end of my projected range but the underlying material appears to be present for that to happen.*Sweet Spot*. Drinking range: 2028 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2018)

(13.2% alcohol; vinified with 80% whole clusters; from 70- and 53-year-old vines that produced 43 hectoliters per hectare): Good dark red. Offers another dimension on the nose, with its aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and soil lifted by floral high tones. Harmonious acidity gives lovely juicy definition and lift to the wine's intense cherry and dark raspberry fruit. Quite refined for a wine from this cellar. Really perfumes the mouth and rises on the finish, which features firm but smooth tannins and lovely lift. Drinking range: 2022 - 2033 Rating: 92 Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar (Jan 2018)

Domaine Lignier-Michelot

A domaine of 11 hectares, 25% regionals, 50% Villages, 20% Premiers crus and 5% Grands Crus. Virgile Lignier worked at the domaine with his father Maurice from 1988, beginning to bottle some of the wine from 1992 (it had previously been sold to the négoce), taking over in 2000, which was the vintage when he first bottled all the domaine's production.

In the vineyard Virgile made significant changes, stopping the use of herbicides, and beginning to plough instead. Green harvesting to limits yields followed, along with greater attention to grape selection. The domaine works organically except in extremis.

The wines have a lovely combination of enough body and richness, combined with a lively clarity of expression. The old vines village cuvées are seriously good, and great value too. Going up the scale each site seems to speak very clearly of its source and there is a brightness and energy along with full, seamless fruit.
