ORION

2016 Field Blend Sean Thackrey

IN STOCK
Grapes Syrah
Colour Red
Origin USA, California
ABV 15%

This impressive wine from Sean Thackrey is mostly Syrah from the very old 'Andrew Rossi' vineyard in the middle of St. Helena in the Napa Valley. A legendary vineyard with ancient and gnarled head-pruned vines over a hundred years old. This is where the variety uncertainty stems from and some of the vines may be Durif. The colour is purple-black, aromas are of mint and blackberry notes with floral hints. Great intensity, full-body, big black fruit on the palate with tints of eucalyptus and minerality, tannin considerable but well-integrated and supple, lovely balance, elegant acidity and hugely long length. This is one of California’s classics. Catch it while you can. L&S (Dec 2021)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

Lastly, the 2016 Orion comes from a single vineyard and is a field blend (the blend isn't specified) from vines planted in 1905. It's a gorgeous effort with a semi-opaque ruby/purple color as well as a smorgasbord-like array of red, blue, and black fruits, toasted spices, candied orange, herbes de Provence, and tobacco. Deep, layered, and full-bodied on the palate, it has remarkable purity of fruit, velvety tannins, a great mid-palate, and one heck of a finish. This brilliant, hedonistic, flawlessly balanced beauty will keep for 10-15 years in cold cellars, if not longer. Drinking range: 2022 - 2037 Rating: 96 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Aug 2022)

Sean Thackrey

Since 1980 until his death in 2022, Sean Thackrey had been producing wines that are quite simply extraordinary wines that have developed a loyal, die-hard following - and rightfully so. not only for the incredible quality and complexity, but also for the relative value they present. Sean had used some unique winemaking techniques, often drawing from historic, sometimes ancient, winemaking practices from all over the world. Famously leaving the freshly picked bunches out, in open-topped bins, for a day and a night under the stars. Grapes were sourced from many locations throughout California, and the wines were made in a very artisanal way at his small Bolinas winery. Self-taught, and with clear natural talent and flair, Sean was the antithesis of corporate wine-making so rife in this part of the wine world and will be sorely missed.
