2016 Vieilles Vignes La Verchère Domaine Daniel Barraud
Tasted from Cask. This is creamy, sour cream and fresh, white berries and some apple blossom on the nose. On the palate there is that house signature of an incredibly lovely, clean flow, good clean lines. Easy, sleek glide then some firmer apple fruit adds some definition. Lovely but not so broad as either the En France or Clos Reyssier. L&S (Oct 2017)

(from 70+ year old vines located in Vergisson). This is primary to the point of being raw as there are still elements from the malo present. Things are much more in place on the palate as there is good verve and detail to the nicely concentrated medium weight flavors that possess fine richness and even good power that carries over to the caressing finish where a hint of bitter lemon adds a bit of lift. This too will need a few years to add depth but the underlying material appears to be present such that it should reasonably happen. (15% new oak, the rest in relatively recent barrels; from 60-year-old vines on calcaire éboulis over marl and clay at 320-330 meters): Bright medium yellow. Mandarin orange, grapefruit, musky menthol and stone on the vibrant nose. A suave, fine-grained midweight with terrific inner-mouth mineral perfume and a tight grain. The tactile, dusty, lightly phenolic finish shows terrific length, but this wine will need a couple more years in bottle to gain in sweetness of fruit. Domaine Daniel Barraud
Daniel and Martine Barraud's vineyards have been in the family since 1890 and with their son Julien now helping to run the domaine - they represent the fifth generation of the family to be making wine here. Most of their 8.5 hectares vines are in Vergisson and are mostly high up under the famous rock (Vergisson lies between the two dramatic cliffs of the rocks of Solutré and Vergisson).
The vineyards here are significantly higher than those of Fuissé, and consequently later-ripening, and the wines often have a more solid structure - but all Daniel's wines have their own character, from the Puligny-like directness of the La Roche to the fat, almost California-like 'en Buland', via the mineral force of the Crays.
