QUINTA DO VESUVIO

2016

EN PRIMEUR

Rich and quite scented, plush with superfine tannins and an abundance of dark ripe fruit, it feels as though designed to give pleasure at a young age. A really juicy, sappy, bowl of fruit. Rating: 92-93 L&S (May 2018)

Densely packed, with lots of warmed fig, mulled blueberry, açai berry and blackberry paste flavors rolling through, scored with graphite and tar notes, carrying through a finish that has a smoldering feel. A long licorice snap echo adds a lip-smacking hint. Drinking range: 2035 - 2055 Rating: 97 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Oct 2018)

The 2016 Quinta do Vesuvio from Symington’s has a slightly more savoury bouquet than its fellow 2016 releases – earthier, almost nuttier with some lovely grilled walnut scents percolating through with time in the glass. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, notes of marmalade and dried quince infusing the cassis and black cherry fruit with high notes of blueberry and a slight saline tincture towards the well balanced, quite persistent finish. Very fine. Drinking range: 2022 - 2040 Rating: 92 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2018)

Very dark blackish crimson. Reminds me a little of the Noval Nacional for its wildness (and foot sweat?!). Rather heady mix of wild herbs and grasses. Very juicy indeed. Massive impact and drama with great grip on the end. Firm tannic grip after all that appeal. Real pace and excitement. Nervy. Convincing dry finish. Drinking range: 2038 - 2065 Rating: 18 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2018)

A blend of Touriga Nacional (43%), Touriga Franca (25%), a relatively high proportion of Alicante Bouschet (17%) alongside Tinta Amarela and Tinto Cão: lovely warm country aromas, ripe, open and very full in style, super-ripe cassis broad and fleshy, backed by weighty tannins, leading to a powerful, explosive finish. Very impressive. 1,220 cases in total. Rating: 18 Richard Mayson, www.richardmayson.com  (May 2018)

Always a radical style of Port, in 2016 Vesuvio doesn’t disappoint with incredibly exotic fruit and a dense, spirit finish. It challenges the senses and requires you to be at the top of your game. Flamboyant and also a little unhinged this is a joyous Vesuvio and a wine which will always bring a smile to my face. Rating: 18.5+ Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2018)

The greenness and stalkiness comes through here with a minty, fennel character as well as blueberry and violet undertones. Peppermint, too. Full-bodied and off-dry, showcasing blue fruits and a spicy, fresh finish. Try in 2022. Rating: 94 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2018)
