SMITH WOODHOUSE

2016

EN PRIMEUR

Smooth and velvety, mid-weight with figgy sweet dark berry fruit, easy and harmonious with a relaxed feel, not the most distinctive, but there's a lovely chocolatey richness. Rating: 91-92 L&S (May 2018)

A serious Port in the making, loaded for bear with dark currant paste, warmed fig sauce and blackberry reduction flavors pouring through. The brambly grip is deeply embedded and there are gorgeous ganache and licorice snap notes hanging on the finish. Drinking range: 2035 - 2055 Rating: 97 James Molesworth, The Wine Spectator (Oct 2018)

The 2016 Vintage Port is an equal blend of old vines and Touriga Franca, coming in with 113 grams per liter of residual sugar. Fresher, livelier and lusher than the Warre's this issue—which is the most accessible of the Symington declarations—it is also going to be approachable relatively young. This is a fine Port, but it's not truly made for greatness. If it is not quite as rich and decadent as Warre's, it is more lifted on the finish, with a sunny feel and a more aromatic beginning. I liked them about equally well, but the styles are certainly different. Neither may be the best agers. Drinking range: 2020 - 2056 Rating: 91 Mark Squires, robertparker.com (Jul 2018)

The 2016 Smith Woodhouse Vintage Port represents the best production from the Quinta da Madalena vineyard, where picking did not begin until 28 September. It perhaps just lacks the same intensity and complexity of its peers with black truffle and smoke aromas infusing the black fruit. The palate is well balanced with a spicy, stem ginger tinged opening that shows much more promise than the nose. I admire the tension here, a nimble and agile Vintage Port that gathers weight towards the finish. Fine, but perhaps a more short-term proposition than its peers. Drinking range: 2021 - 2035 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jun 2018)

That super-deep Sym crimson again. Very luscious, appealing nose. Smooth and sweet, a sort of cadet to the big guns initially but then freshness and polished tannins (masses of them) kick in. Rather inky, almost bitter on the end. Leathery. Drinking range: 2033 - 2055 Rating: 17+ Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (May 2018)

Entirely from Quinta da Madelena in the Torto Valley, primarily a field blend of old vines, picked late from 28th September onwards: open, fragrant, ripe cherry and floral fruit aromas; lovely firm, well defined berry fruit on the palate, some bitter chocolate intensity mid-palate, fine grained, peppery tannins leading to a long sinewy finish. Very good middle-weight, middle-distance wine, leaner in style than other wines from the Symington Estates. Just 1,500 cases in total. Rating: 16.5 Richard Mayson, www.richardmayson.com  (May 2018)

Chunky, juicy and a touch more rustic and spicy than others, this is good fun and it shows the strides forward at this jolly House. Trying to keep up with the big names, and almost making it this is a great effort from this workhorse estate. Rating: 17.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (May 2018)

This is extremely floral with dark fruit and plum character. Full-bodied, very tight and focused. It's a complete young vintage Port that is great from start to finish. Rio Torto fruit makes this great! Better in 2022. Rating: 96 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (May 2018)

In 1784, Christopher Smith, a wine merchant and Lord Mayor of London, founded a small company shipping Port from offices based in Oporto. In 1835 after Smith's death, the Woodhouse brothers joined the firm and Smith Woodhouse was created. Since 1970, the company has been owned and run by the Symington Family. The main vineyard for Smith Woodhouse is Quinta Madalena based in the Rio Torto which is in the heart of the Douro region and widely renowned for its high quality ports.
