Quite serious step up from the village wine. Dark, toasty nose, with a little reduction that tightens things up. This does seem slightly inward looking, but has a nice shape and intensity. Just quite dark blue in profile of flavour. Finishes with a good creamy sensation to the fruit, reminiscent of sugared blackberry cream left in a bowl after a crumble. L&S (Oct 2017)

The 2016 Volnay Les Chevrets 1er Cru currently shows a lot of reduction on the nose that occludes the appellation profile. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, but it comes across as more winemaking than wine, with a simple finish that is pleasurable, but lacks the intellectual heft one should find in a Premier Cru. Drink over the next 15 years or so. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting in Burgundy. Drinking range: 2020 - 2035 Rating: 88 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Oct 2019)

(from 25+ year old vines). A more discreet touch of wood frames ripe cassis, black cherry and plum aromas that are laced with plenty of spice and a somewhat atypical hint of the sauvage. The rich and full-bodied flavors possess excellent mid-palate density as there is an admirable amount of sap before terminating in an impressively complex and naturally sweet finish. This should age well but thanks to the abundant sap, it should be approachable young too. Drinking range: 2026 - Rating: 92 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Apr 2018)

(from four parcels of vines between 40 and 60 years of age; fruit in the lower section of the vineyard was wiped out by the frost): Healthy medium red. Slightly reduced nose conveys and medicinal dark raspberry aroma. Then fine-grained and graceful in the mouth, conveying an impression of delicacy to the flavors of raspberry, currant and flowers. Finishes quite suave and long, with very refined tannins. The Boillots made just 10 barrels in place of a normal 30, 3 of them new. Rating: 91-93 Stephen Tanzer, www.vinousmedia.com (Jan 2018)

Domaine Henri Boillot

A domaine which dates to 1885, but which began properly in the early years of the 20th century under the current Henri's grandfather (also Henri). His son, Jean, was the one who really developed it. Henri arrived in 1975 and worked his way up, becoming the winemaker. In 2000 he began the building of the new winery at the bottom of Meursault, and he then bought out his brother and sister to keep the domaine as one, renaming it from 'Domaine Jean Boillot' to 'Domaine Henri Boillot' to avoid confusion with his brother Jean-Marc's domaine.

The Domaine totals around 14 hectares, with roughly equal surfaces of red and white, and of which just under 4ha is the Monopole vineyard of Clos de la Mouchère, a walled enclave within the premier Cru Puligny Perrières. The 2017 vintage saw the arrival of two new parcels of Grand Cru red, in Échezeaux and Latricières Chambertin
