Patrizia Felluga left the family business over a decade ago and she has gone from strength to strength, or rather from strength to subtlety. I clearly remember tasting my first Zuani – I wrote up the 2009 vintage in this august tome, eight years ago, squealing with delight at its charms. It is fair to say that this mesmerising blend of Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon is on finer form than I have ever seen. Indeed, I obliterated a bottle of it at The River Café earlier this year with their stellar grub. This is a sensational and complex, dry, unoaked white wine which is bursting with distinction. As every year this brilliant field-blend is made up of Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Friulano. Pale in colour with brilliantly bright flavours of white blossomy flowers and crisp white fruit. What really makes it stand out is the incredible texture and deep vein of minerality that encapsulates the very best of Collio, and as such is one of Italy's great white wines. Lovely nose of white flowers, spice, melon, citrus and touch of honey. Palate is fleshy, bright and filled with spicy, citrus, melon, peach and floral notes, delicious. Just over 12 years ago Patrizia Felluga left the family business in order to buy her own property in the heart of the Collio and set about her ambition of making a 'terroir' based wine. Working now with her two children she is creating beautiful, crystaline wines with great character. Her seven hectares are planted with fifteen to thirty year old Friulano, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon vines, from which she produces just two wines, each the same blend, one of which is oaked. Each variety is vinified separately in stainless steel and blended to make wines which are wonderfully expressive of the vineyard.
