2017 Salomon Finniss River Estate
|Origin||Australia, South Australia|
An Aussie Shiraz crafted in South Australia by Bert Salomon who, when not sunning it up in the Southern Hemisphere, makes delightful Austrian Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in the Kremstal in Austria. This is Aussie Shiraz, so expect some ripe fruit and a tickle of leathery spice, but there is a defter and more refreshing touch than most of its ilk which keeps the Baan really rather drinkable. L&S (Sep 2019)
*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles (or 9l equivalent) of wine or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified to get the 'case price' for each bottle.
OUr great friends the fabulous Salomon family famous in Austria for the historic estate also have this sensationbal outpost in Australia - Salomon Estate. Here they make elegant Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. Atop the rolling hills of the Finniss River wine-growing area the grapes ripen in an idyllic micro-climate. Finniss River extends along the southeast shoulder of the Adelaide Hills, part of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Salomon Estate wines mirror the unique qualities of this landscape: you can feel the midday sun in their fruits and the chilled air of the nearby Southern Ocean in their acids. These exceptional wines reflect the fruit of Australia with a European approach to winemaking. Bert, Gertrud, Fay Marie and young Bert Salomon bridge the old and the new wine world. Harvesting twice a year they commute between Finniss River/Australia and their famous white wine estate Salomon Undhof – Austria, which they manage in the eighth generation. Always one to make the right decisions at the right time, Bert is helped by iconic Australian winemaker Mike Farmilo, longtime friend and former chief red winemaker at Penfolds.
Bert Salomon developed a taste for Australian wine whilst working for a wine importer in Vienna and, in 1995, he purchased the Finnis River Estate. He now oversees two harvests a year - one at the family firm in the Wachau and Kremstal areas in his homeland Austria, and another on the other side of the world in Australia. The Finniss River extends along the southeast shoulder of the Adelaide Hills, part of the Fleurieu Peninsula, and offers a slightly cooler vine growing region. Bert has planted mostly Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon with a little Merlot. His is more than ably assisted by Mike Farmilo, longtime friend and a former Penfolds red winemaker.
You know, you can be too traditional. Ring the changes, ditch the claret, bin the Burgundy, say "non" to Europe. Since Columbus sailed the ocean blue back in 1492 there's been a New World, and that New World is keen to sell us wine. Fragrant New Zealand Sauvignon, gutsy Californian Zinfandel, elegant Argie & Oregon Pinot Noir, elegant Australian and some new and exciting Mourvedre from Lodi await. Tuck in.
Isn't everybody drinking Malbec these days? Everyone likes a nice Malbec, it seems. But, isn't it getting just a shade repetitive? So, what do you do? You want all the deep, dark fruit of the Malbec, all the instant appeal of the Malbec, all the oomph of the Malbec, all the...well...Malbec-iness of the Malbec, what happens if you want all that without it actually being a Malbec? Help is at hand, folks, tuck into this case of not-Malbecs and get all Malbecky without getting all Malbecky. If you see what I mean.
