BEAUJOLAIS VILLAGES

2017 Domaine Rochette

Grapes Gamay
Colour Red
Origin France, Beaujolais
Sub-district Beaujolais Villages
ABV 13.5%

Really nicely weighted Gamay fruit. There is a depth to this, dark plum-flesh and some strawberry too - but this is not sweet nor tart, just a brilliantly balanced, highly enjoyable glass of red. Some gentle herb notes add a sophisticated tone, this is really stylish, with no hard edges - just a delicious smooth flow. From the cellar or 'just chilled' on a hot day this will be the perfect partner to lunch in the garden or a delightful evening aperitif. L&S (Jun 2019)

Lighter in frame than my other reds, (in MJ's 'Daily Mail Definitive Christmas Collection 2019') this is a red which white wine lovers could easily move to such is its freshness and purity, this is a youthful, raspberry and cherry imbued wine and it can be chilled or drunk at normal red wine temperature to devastating effect.Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Dec 2019)

Stony, minerally nose and then lovely juicy fruit. Great impact and could only be Beaujolais-Villages! Real substance to this wine. An excellent example. GV Drinking range: 2019 - 2023 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Jun 2019)

Domaine Rochette

The Rochette family estate was new to us at the end of 2009, and a very happy discovery indeed. The Beaujolais Villages and Régnié come from 50 year-old vines on stony-sandy soils on a granite bedrock,. The Rochettes work with a very traditional but also clearly very rigorous approach to the viticulture, and, as usual in Beaujolais, where the 'gobelet' training of the vines make them impossible to work by machine, they hand-pick and make a severe selection in the vineyard. Vinification is traditional, in cuve, to make wines which accentuate fruit purity.
The wines have a real identity of their own - as Matthieu says 'it is the terroir that gives us the distinction to the wines - we do not interfere in the cellar - and they all come from the same grape' - Gamay. When tasting the line up in the cellars with the family this incredible distinction could not have been more clear - from the bouncy Beaujolais Villages through the Régniés and on to the Morgon distinct personalities are dramatically different - fascinating. Very sadly Joël died in 2015 - but Matthieu is continuing his father's great work without missing a beat ably supported by his wonderful mother, Chantal. These wines simply sing. Charming and real - a great bargain from these beautiful rolling hills.
