From sand and gravel soils this pure Cabernet Franc is superb. Loaded with crunchy dark berries and peppy red juice but there is a sheen of lovely polished black fruit too, lifted by spice and and fine grained mineral texture. Sleek and fresh Cabernet Franc - delicious! The Amiraults have been working organically for 15 years now and this great wine is a selection of the same plots year in year out. L&S (Oct 2018)

Leathery, rich, smoky and concentrated with a fabulous streak of green on the palate and tacky, fibrous tannins. Rounded off with a lovely dose of acidic refreshment. Drinking range: 2019 - 2022 Rating: 16.5 Richard Hemming MW - www.JancisRobinson.com (Aug 2019)

Bourgueil is made from a grape variety that, until recently, the rest of the world regarded as little more than a minor player, a support act for Cabernet Sauvignon and/or Merlot in blends. Now Cabernet Franc is right up there with the grape fashionistas, used as a solo star by winemakers as far afield as Chile and Argentina, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand and Languedoc and appreciated in these warmer climates for the leafy freshness and spicy lift it gives. But the Loire Valley is still its heartland – in Chinon, Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil and Saumur Champigny as well as Bourgueil – there producing medium-bodied reds with beautifully fresh fruit, fine texture and mineral coolness. Yannick Amirault's Bourgueil La Coudraye is a textbook example of crunchy blackcurrant and currant-leaf freshness with a streak of spice and minerally graphite flavours. Polished, authentic and wonderfully approachable, from an organic estate where everything is hand-picked and fermented with natural yeasts. Serve it cool with such things as lamb, tuna, carpaccio, charcuterie, summer veg, pesto. 13%. 'Wine of the Week'Joanna Simon, www.joannasimon.com (Jul 2019)

Domaine Yannick Amirault

Yannick Amirault took over three and a half hectares of vines from his grandfather 30 years ago, and today with his son Benoit works 12 hectares in Bourgeuil and 7 in St-Nicholas-de-Bourgeuil. The vineyards have been worked organically for 15 years and have been certified Organic since 2009. The family are seriously talented in the cellar and not shy of trying new things - the new Malgagnes cuvée which ages in their special Jarres are testament to this. Everything is hand harvested and hard work in the vineyards means only the very best fruit is brought in. Only natural yeasts are used, with fermentations being allowed as long as they need. These wines are crisp and bright with a dramatic purity - made as naturally as possible but without having any unsatisfactory 'natural' traits. Incredible quality here across the range.
