CHÂTEAU DE CÉRONS

2017 Graves

Grapes Cab Sauv, Merlot
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Graves
ABV 13%

The 2017 de Cérons has a perfumed, floral, almost Margaux-like bouquet with fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red and black fruit laced with pencil lead and black pepper, nicely balanced on the finish with plenty of freshness. This Graves has produced a decent 2017 that should give several years of drinking pleasure. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 88-90 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (May 2018)

There's an emphasis on soft berries, white pepper spice and redcurrant fruits here. Again, a touch of under ripeness is evident, but this is an enjoyable wine with a welcome sweetness rom 25% new oak barrels to round out the finish. It has been extremely carefully handled and offers great medium term drinking. They were fairly heavily affected by frost in parts, but were still able to reach around 50% production. Drinking range: 2020 - 2028 Rating: 86 Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2018)

55% Cabernet, 45% Merlot. Deep purplish crimson. Lovely lifted cherry and cassis aroma, complemented by the lightest touch of spice plus a delicate dusty minerality. Elegant on the palate – the tannins are very fine and perfectly balanced by the freshness and the lively fresh fruit. Subtle but sustained on the finish. Quite gentle. Drinking range: 2021 - 2029 Rating: 16 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2018)

Pepper and herb character to this as well as citrus. Light and straightforward with rather high acidity. Rating: 85-86 James Suckling, www.jamessuckling.com (Apr 2018)

Château de Cérons

Ever in the shadow of its illustrious neighbours, the small region of Cérons sits just downstream of Barsac and Sauternes. As the name suggests, the major presence here is the Château de Cérons. In keeping with the location, the tradition has been to make sweet wines (and Château de Cérons do, indeed, make a delightful sweetie) but more interesting perhaps are the immaculate red and dry whites. Brimming with class and a polished finesse - the wines are seriously smart and delicious The property is run by Caroline and Xavier Perromat. Caroline worked at Haut Bailly for 15 years alongside Véronique Sanders - they both arrived there in 1998, but now she is working with her husband with his family estate. This is one to watch in the Graves, with brilliant white wine to rival many Crus Classés, and red of superb refinement and delicacy of tannin. They are working towards a fuller feel to the red wines here, year by year. There is also a small volume of Cérons, the tiny appellation for sweet wine which is a bit lighter and dryer than most Sauternes, refined and very elegant. They farm organically, although are not yet official with this - but the property has just received HVE3 (High Environmental Value) certification.
