2017 Wachtberg DAC Erste Lage Salomon Undhof

Grapes Grüner Veltliner
Colour White
Origin Austria, Kremstal
Classification DAC Erste Lage
ABV 13%

A fuller mouthfeel than the Hochterrassen, yet juicy, and not in the least heavy. The texture is very inviting. On the palate this combines subtle hints of firm apricot fruit and a stony, saline finish. Also herbs and white pepper waft out of the glass. Impressive and persistent but not overdone – this is a serious rendition and a complete delight. L&S (Jun 2019)

A little reductive on the nose. A concentrated mid palate with fresh green fruit and a chalky feel to it. A nicely made wine with zesty freshness and good weight and intensity. Just drops off slightly on the finish. Drinking range: 2019 - 2021 Rating: 16 Alistair Cooper MW - 2019)

Rather closed, this sleek yet rather muscular grüner veltliner has a long but austere finish. Maybe better from 2019. Screw cap. Drinking range: 2019 - Rating: 91 James Suckling, 2019)

Quite rich and dense, as though it will have quite a long life. Broad and ripe with a strong white pepper note. Tastes so ripe there could almost be a little RS but it's probably just that the acidity is relatively low. Drinking range: 2018 - 2023 Rating: 16.5 Jancis Robinson OBE MW - 2018)

Salomon Undhof

Founded in 1792 SALOMON UNDHOF is a wine estate with a long tradition. The Salomon family from the Wachau produces white wines from the best terraced "Urgestein" sites along the Danube River in Stein and Krems. Today Bert and Gertrud Salomon run the winery. The famous Riesling of the estate thrives on the topsites of Kögl and Pfaffenberg. The Grüner Veltliner Von Stein comes from the steep terrassed hills behind the old town of Stein. The best "loess" soils provide the Lindberg and Wachtberg Grüner Veltliner. All the grapes are harvested traditionally by hand only. Their great vineyard locations and meticulous work in the vineyards are prerequisites for their elegant wines. Wines with finesse and perfect mineral balance reflect the very special micro climate of this lovely river valley. The Estate’s Grüner Veltliner and Riesling distinguish themselves through elegance and consistency.
