LES CHÊNES DE MACQUIN

2017 Saint Emilion

Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
District Right Bank
Sub-district Saint Emilion & Satellites
Village Saint Emilion
ABV 13%

This very refined Saint Emilion is the second wine from the mighty Château Pavie Macquin. With just enough 'pillowy' luxuriance - this delivers neatly refined claret. Not hiding its right-bank weight - this does, however, offer a purity of fruit and energetic joy with great restraint. We tasted in a long line up of other Bordeaux wines and this really shone. Giving us just what we would hope for from here. Great, heart-restoring, reaffirming claret. Polished and sophisticated, but far from dull. L&S (Sept 2021)

The 2017 Les Chênes de Macquin captures all of the exuberance and intensity that are such a signature of this Saint-Émilion estate. Jammy dark fruit, chocolate, spice, new leather and menthol all race out of the glass. Racy and flamboyant to the core, the Chênes offers terrific immediacy and plenty of near- to medium-term appeal. Although not especially nuanced, the Chênes is boisterous, generous and very easy to like. Tasted two times. Drinking range: 2022 - 2032 Rating: 91 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2020)

Château Pavie Macquin

Château Pavie Macquin owes its name to the grand-father of the current owners Albert Macquin (1852-1911), who used plant grafting as a way to save the Saint-Emilion vineyard, destroyed by phylloxera. Since 1994, Nicolas Thienpont has been managing this family property of 15 hectares which was promoted « Premier Grand Cru Classé » in September 2006. The vineyard of Pavie Macquin is situated on the summit of the Saint-Emilion plateau. Thanks to its commanding position, its height ranges from 100 meters above sea level next to the hill, to 75 meters on the edge of the plateau. The soils are all limestone-clay and express different aspects of the terroir through the vine, depending on the strength of the clay, and above all on their proximity to the asteriated limestone layer at a depth of between 20cm and 150cm. Pavie Macquin is the combination of power and minerality.
