The charming ‘Power-Couple’ behind so much greatness on Burgundy’s Cote d’Or are making brilliant wines here in their Languedoc outpost. Old vines and high vineyards are the key here and they are making wonderful wines. The Fontanilles is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault from vines between 20-50 years of age. Matured in a mixture of 50% Barrique and 50% stainless steel, this is darker fuller fruited style. Blackberry, plum and raspberry, with a plethora of herbs and peppery spice. Drinking range: 2019 - 2025 L&S (Apr 2020)

The 2017 Minervois Les Fontanilles—a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault—comes from a cool, north-facing plot surrounded by garrigue. The wine is medium to full-bodied and supple, with the red-toned fruit picking up hints of resinous herbs, like rosemary and bay leaf, on the finish. Half of the wine was aged in barrel, half in tank, but the wood isn't particularly prominent, maybe just adding a touch of roundness around the edges and hints of cedar and vanilla on the nose. Domaine Anne Gros et Jean-Paul Tollot

Anne Gros and Jean-Paul Tollot (Domaine Tollot-Beaut) have taken over some wonderful vineyards in the Minervois, and brought Burgundian savoir-faire to an area which all too often produces sweet or leaden-footed lumpen wines. These wines have a style of lively freshness which is so uncommon anywhere in Languedoc-Roussillon. We were bowled over by their drinkability, and feel they offer so much in terms of character and flavour, while remaining easy to approach, mineral and light of touch.
