MONTAGNY

2017 1er Cru Jean-Marc Boillot

Grapes Chardonnay
Colour White
Origin France, Burgundy
District Côte Chalonnaise
Village Montagny
Classification 1er Cru
ABV 13%

Crisp and clean juice. Nicely pithy and not overly broad nor lean. Just well pitched. This has been in bottle since the beginning of August and is nicely settled. This remains quite tight, quite closed - but it is good and nicely citrus and chalky too. Montagny was hit badly by the frosts that hit in the late Spring and volumes are right down this year. L&S (Oct 2018)

Crushed citrus, white flowers, oyster shell, and some obvious minerality emerge from the 2017 Montagny 1er Cru. It’s medium-bodied, clean, crisp, and pure on the palate, with a juicy, delicious style. It’s also going to evolve nicely. Drinking range: 2019 - 2026 Rating: 91 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (Apr 2019)

2017 Montagny 1er Cru is, once again, a star. I love this wine and it is still the right side of £20 and that means that it is a must buy. J-M Boillot is an epic name in Burgundy and this lowly Montagny label performs like a Côte d’Or wine on the nose and palate. Rating: 17.5 Matthew Jukes www.matthewjukes.com (Jan 2019)

The 2017 Montagny 1er Cru has a finely detailed bouquet of crushed gravel mixed with sea spray and light apple blossom aromas. The well-balanced palate is fresh on the entry, delivering crisp acidity and quince and subtle caramelized pear notes, leading to a peppery finish. Enjoy this over the next decade. A fine Montagny. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2019)

Jean-Marc Boillot

Jean-Marc's daughter Lydie and son-in-law François Alzingre have worked alongside him and effectively run the domaine, and are now being joined by their children. Alongside the wines from the family's own vineyards, They also run a successful négociant business, vinifying wines from the Côte Chalonnaise with huge aplomb. In Montagny in particular, the wine is the best we have found in the appellation, and remarkably consistent from year to year.
