RIDGE

2017 Geyserville Ridge Vineyards

Grapes Carignan, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah
Colour Red
Origin USA, California
ABV 14.5%

The Ridge team have produced this single plot blend since the very start in 1966. They now own the vineyard and are committed to always making this completely individual wine that gives something unique every year. Geyserville is a traditional field blend of zinfandel and its complementary varieties: carignane, petite sirah, and mataro. There are some ancient vines here planted in 1882 that continue to form the heart of this deep and concentrated blend. All the varieties are fermented together as Eric Baugher, the winemaker, explains 'it is like nature's alchemy - doing it like this you get a better result than blending later - this is something you could never just 'create'. It is a single plot and one of Ridge's longest living wines - Systematically great with 10 years or more in bottle this is on of the original Californian cult-classic. Heady and intnese but always measured and sophisticated too. Seriously impressive. L&S (Apr 2019)

The 2017 Zinfandel Geyserville exudes energy, but it is also very tight and closed in on itself. Time in the glass helps the wine open up, but only to a limited extent. Pretty scents of leather, savory herbs, spice and earthiness hint at what is to come. Readers should plan on being patient, but Ridge lovers know that. In most years, Geyserville starts hitting its stride around age ten. Drinking range: 2025 - 2042 Rating: 92+ Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jul 2019)

Ridge Vineyards

Although Ridge Vineyards began in the 1960s, wine has been produced at the site under the name 'Monte Bello Winery' since 1885 when Osea Perrone bought 180 acres of land near the top of Monte Bello. The winery passed through a couple of owners until 1960 when it was bought by four Stanford Research Institute engineers, David Bennion, Charles Rosen, Hewitt Crane, and Howard Zeidler, who produced its first commercial vintage in 1962. Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel account for the largest percentage of the wine produced at Ridge, and it is famous primarily for its reds.
