SASSICAIA

2017 Tenuta San Guido Incisa della Rocchetta

Grapes Cab Franc, Cab Sauv
Colour Red
Origin Italy, Tuscany
District Bolgheri
ABV 14%

The 2017 Sassicaia shows the natural richness and intensity of the year while retaining its mid-weight sense of balance and overall poise. A burst of super-ripe red cherry/plum fruit makes a strong opening statement. Mocha, cinnamon, leather and dried herbs appear later, adding aromatic lift. The 2017 is a fairly immediate Sassicaia. Even so, it has enough energy to drink well for a number of years. Production is down 35%, a combination of naturally low yields, dehydration on the vine and then selection in the cellar. Most of the fruit comes from the estate’ hillside vineyards, older parcels that resisted the conditions better. Drinking range: 2022 - 2037 Rating: 94 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Jan 2021)

Consultant Graziana Grassini described Sassicaia's 2017 vintage as 'contracted and difficult, but it evolved impressively well with great strides during the oak ageing.' The wine shows intensity and elegance on a restrained nose of bramble fruit, cedar, kiwi peel and a touch of oak. Velvety, silky tannins and brilliant acidity are supported by creamy mid-palate weight with an amazingly savoury finish of cedar and tobacco. Drinking range: 2020 - 2040 Rating: 97 Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter.com (Nov 2020)

A taut, densely wrought red, with black currant, black cherry, iron, wild herb and spice flavors matched to the elegant frame and restrained character. Balanced and long, this has a distinctly Old World feel and looks set to unravel its complex facets slowly. Terrific length. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Drinking range: 2022 - 2043 Rating: 95 Bruce Sanderson, The Wine Spectator (Sept 2020)

85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc. Hint of opaqueness to the ruby colour. Nutty, spicy oak, with deep, nuanced black fruit and a dash of fresh earth. More backward, less expressive than the scented, floral 2016 shown last year. Also, unlike the 2016, this is more firmly structured and tighter, so is not one that would favour broaching young. The tannins are nevertheless very fine grained and will convey the sense of elegance of Sassicaia over time. Lovely length. Drinking range: 2026 - 2045 Rating: 17.5+ Tim Jackson MW, www.jancisrobinson.com (Mar 2020)

Tenuta San Guido Incisa della Rocchetta

Sassicaia is the only single estate wine in Italy with its own appellation - Bolgheri Sassicaia. It was the original "Super Tuscan" and is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, aged for 24 months in French barriques, of which these days ony 20% are new. Mario Incisa della Rochetta, part of a grand old Italian family who's roots extend back to the Renaissance and beyond, and cousin of the Antinoris, married Clarice della Gherardesca in 1930 and with his wife came some land in Bolgheri. The story of Sassicaia was just beginning. Mario dreamed of making a wine like the grand vins of Bordeaux and, noticing a similarity between his Bolgheri vineyards and those of the Graves, decided to plant some Cabernet Sauvignon. In the early years the wine was just for consumption on the estate and was not always well appreciated. Fortunately, a few cases were put away to age with each vintage and, once time had worked its magic, it became clear that these were wines that only truly showed their majesty with a few years in bottle. The first vintage released for commercial sale was the 1968 and it transformed Tuscan wine and has given rise to a host of imitators and rivals. Sassicaia is now revered, not only as one of the best wines in Italy, but as one of the best wines in the world.
