BLANC DE LYNCH BAGES

2018 Château Lynch Bages

Grapes Muscadelle, Sauv Blanc, Sémillon
Colour White
Origin France, Bordeaux
ABV 13%

Passion fruit, lime blossom and scraping citrus, with a touch of gunsmoke and slate to keep things tight and focused. 50% new oak, harvest September 5 to 11. The grapes are handled in a variety of ways at Lynch Bages, using a mix of pressing both with and without stems, followed by fermentation in barrel for two thirds of the crop and in vat for the rest, then ageing on the lees for 6 months. A great moment to drink, but no rush and this is a white wine with enough structure to age. Drinking range: 2021 - 2026 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Oct 2021)

Bottled in May, the 2018 Blanc de Lynch Bages was matured for six months in 50% new oak, the Sauvignon Blanc fermented in tank. This has more vigor and attack on the nose compared to the 2017, delivering citrus fruit, Granny Smith apples and fresh pear aromas. The saline palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity and a pretty, fresh malic finish. I prefer this to the 2017. Drinking range: 2020 - 2025 Rating: 89 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Nov 2019)

From vines just to the west of the estate and mostly Sauvignon Blanc, the 2018 Château Lynch-Bages Blanc is a solid effort, offering classic notes of lemon curd, white flowers, and subtle minerality, medium body, good freshness and purity, and a clean, dry finish. Rating: 90-92 Jeb Dunnuck, www.jebdunnuck.com (May 2019)

Complex aroma that is herbal, spicy and with a lovely nose that is so typically Bordeaux Blanc. Cedary but with lemon and grapefruit freshness too. Slight grip, moderate concentration, more interesting aromatically than for its intensity. Not very long but super-fresh. Drinking range: 2020 - 2024 Rating: 16.5 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2019)

Château Lynch Bages

Pauillac Cinquième cru 1855 Thomas Lynch emigrated to Bordeaux from Galway in Ireland in 1691. He had two children and it was his son Thomas who associated the family name with Bordeaux by inheriting Lynch-Bages through his wife, and buying Lynch-Moussas and Dauzac in Margaux. Jean-Charles Cazes, who had recently bought Château Les Ormes de Pez in St Estèphe, took the tenancy of Lynch-Bages in 1934, and bought the property outright five years later. It has been the ownership of the Cazes family, who still own the estate, which turned Château Lynch Bages into the leading estate it is today, far exceeding the seemingly lowly 5th growth status bestowed upon it in 1855. There are 90ha of vines in the small village of Bages, just south of Pauillac. Red grapes are planted to 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Wines are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel before ageing in wood (60% new) for 15 months. There has been a second wine produced at Lynch-Bages since 1978 that was originally called Château Haut Bages Averous, but has recently been renamed Echo de Lynch Bages. A small amount of Château Lynch Bages Blanc is made from 40% each of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon and 20% Muscadelle.
