Sancerre’s rival for the greatest producer of Loire sauvignon blanc is Pouilly-Fumé. Beginner’s in wine are often told that the way to distinguish Pouilly from Sancerre is to look for the distinctive whiff of gun flint – a smoky smell like someone’s just let off a cap gun. I’ve never been entirely convinced by this: from time to time I do pick up smoky notes in Pouilly-Fumé, but no more often than I do in other Loire (or indeed, global) sauvignon blancs. Mostly the big differences between the wines of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé seem to come down more to winemaking style and the precise patch of vineyard the producer is working with. I’ve never reliably been able to tell them apart. What I do know, however, is that the sauvignon blanc of Château de Tracy is among my favourites in Pouilly-Fumé, the Loire, the world … a wine of evanescent, verdant, spirit-lifting charm. Exposure : South west Soil : Flint and Kimmeridgian Variéty : Sauvignon Blanc Natural ABV 13,42 ° Acidity : 3.93 g/l Vinification : 600 hl in concrete and stainless-steel vats Extract dried : 19 g /l The 2018 vintage is, without a doubt, an unusual vintage, characterised by a strong contrast between a late and cool winter and the driest summer on record since 1945. This vintage shows high natural sugar levels and great aromatic richness, reminiscent of the 2009 and 2015 vintages. The Sauvignon is at its best, mouthwatering and with an extraordinary aromatic character. Winemaker's notes(Aug 2019)
Founded in 1396, Chateau de Tracy has been in the hands of Comte Henri d'Assay's family for 610 years, which is something of an achievement in itself. Located in the village of Tracy sur Loire the estate covers thirty two hectares under production, on flint and kimmeridgian limestone south west facing slopes overlooking the Loire. With an average age of twenty four years the vines produce significantly lower yields than is the norm in the appellation, making for wines of great intensity, complexity and finesse.
