2018 3ème Cru Classé Saint Julien

IN STOCK
Colour Red
Origin France, Bordeaux
Sub-district Haut Médoc
Village Saint Julien
Classification 3ème Cru Classé

63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc. 60% new wood. Damien says there is a bit more Cabernet Franc in this than usual because they were so impressed with the quality in 2018. There's definitely more red fruit here than in the Léoville Barton. It has a really suave feel and so much juicy flow. Perhaps the extra Cabernet Franc has lent more freshness? There's just such a lovely drinkability. This is so much better than many of the more grandly priced Saint Julien. Drinking range: 2025 - 2045 L&S (Apr 2019)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

At this point Langoa was really starting to stand out among its peers in St Julien, and it is performing extremely strongly here. Retains the touch of austerity that I found En Primeur, with powerful tannins asserting their presence, but riven through with sappy and smiling raspberry and blackberry fruit. Woodsmoke, liqourice and clove spices show the warmth of the year. Excellent stuff, one to look out for. Technical director François Brehant, consultant Eric Boissenot. Drinking range: 2026 - 2044 Rating: 94 Jane Anson, Decanter (Mar 2022)

The 2018 Langoa Barton was picked September 21–24 for the Merlot and September 29–October 6 for the Cabernet, then matured in 60% new oak. It remains opulent and high-toned on the nose, retaining those overt blueberry and cassis scents that I remarked upon in barrel. The palate is sweet and charming, though for me it needs a little more grip and backbone on the finish. This is a Langoa-Barton that might be just a little too willing to please at this early juncture, which leaves me speculating what it has in reserve for long-term cellaring. Drinking range: 2023 - 2040 Rating: 91 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Langoa Barton is succulent and racy right out of the gate. Inky red fruit, sweet floral notes, cedar and spice all mesh together effortlessly. This mid-weight, pliant Saint-Julien is every bit as seductive as it was from barrel. Drinking range: 2024 - 2038 Rating: 92 Antonio Galloni, www.vinous.com (Mar 2021)

Château Langoa Barton

Hugh Barton acquired the estate of Château Pontet-Langlois (and re-named it Langoa-Barton) in 1821, a few years before he then bought a portion of the estate of the Marquis de Léoville Beauvais, which he renamed Léoville Barton. The Barton's ownership of Langoa is the longest ownership by one family of any estate in the Médoc. There was no château to the Loville portion, and the wines were, and still are, made at Langoa. The Bartons had already been a fixture of the Bordeaux wine trade for a hundred years at this stage - Thomas Barton left his native Ireland in 1722 and settled in Bordeaux, eventually buying Château le Boscq in St Estèphe in 1745. His grandson Hugh, who bought the two Barton estates, developed a wine merchant's business with Daniel Guestier (Barton & Guestier), and the Guestier family proved crucial in protecting the Barton's châteaux during both the French Revolution and World War II when the Bartons had to flee France. Langoa Barton's vineyard classed as a 'Troisieme Cru Classé' in 1855, is quite small for this part of the Médoc with only 17 hectares in production. Planted with mostly Cabernet and Merlot, at 9100 vines per hectare, like Léoville itself. Also like Léoville, it is a terroir of deep gravel over clay. The average vine age is around 35 years.
