(the blend has now changed from 50/50 to two-thirds/one-third from the climats of Les Rouges du Bas and Les Quartiers de Nuits; 15% whole clusters). Moderately discreet but not invisible wood frames ripe and wonderfully spicy, fresh and layered aromas of both red and dark currant along with notes of hoisin and mocha. There is once again excellent volume and richness to the concentrated medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sap on the dusty, serious and lengthy finish that displays really lovely balance. Patience though once again is strongly advised. Drinking range: 2033 - Rating: 91-94 Allen Meadows, www.Burghound.com (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Echezeaux Grand Cru soars from the glass with a pretty bouquet of cherries, raspberries, smoked duck, cinnamon and rose petals that's framed by a deft touch of new oak and also subtly inflected by the 15% whole clusters that this cuvée saw this year. On the palate, it's full-bodied, velvety and succulent, with an expansive attack, excellent depth at the core and a long, nicely defined finish. Rating: 94-96 William Kelley, The Wine Advocate (Jan 2020)

The 2018 Echézeaux Grand Cru comes from two parcels in Les Quartier de Nuits and Les Rouges du Bas and is the only cru that includes whole cluster (20%) and is matured in 60% new oak. It has a very well-defined bouquet of blackberry, raspberry, sous-bois and a touch of pepperiness emanating from the stems. The palate is medium-bodied with gorgeous, lithe tannins, a fine bead of acidity and quite a dense, grippy finish that suggests it will need several years in bottle. Excellent. Drinking range: 2024 - 2042 Rating: 93-95 Neal Martin, www.vinous.com (Jan 2020)

Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg

Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg was founded in 1933 on the marriage of Jeanne Gibourg and André Mugneret. Holdings then consisted of Bourgogne, village Nuits, village Vosne and Echezeaux. Their son Georges, an opthalmologist by day, added to the vineyards, but his acquisitions (Nuits 1ers Crus Vignes Rondes and Chaignots, Chambolle 1er Cru Feusselottes, and Grands Crus Clos Vougeot and Ruchottes Chambertin) were kept separate as Domaine Georges Mugneret.

On Georges' death in 1988, his widow Jacqueline and daughter Marie-Christine took over. Marie-Andrée, the younger daughter joined them a little later having completed her studies as an oenologist. In 2009 Jacqueline retired and the two domaine names were put together to become Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg, ending the prior confusion of labels.

The sisters have proved more than safe hands as far as the winemaking is concerned, and these are top-flight Burgundies with that elusive balance of enough concentration allied with delicacy of expression and the capability to age well. All the vineyard management has been brought in-house (the domaine previously relied on two métayeurs for part of the vineyard) and the quality has reached new heights, its wines some of the most sought-after in the Côte de Nuits.

In 2017 Marie-Christine 's daughter Lucie joined the domaine, and Marion and Fanny, daughters of Marie-Andrée are now also part of the team.
