El Escolladero is named after a steep pathway over the Sierra de Cantabria that borders this 0.95- hectare parcel in Ábalos. Marrying Tempranillo with 25% Graciano, it's one of Rioja's most exciting reds, showing subtle reduction, perfumed oak and layers of aniseed, black cherry and liquorice supported by chalky, stony minerality. Long and distinguished on the palate with the structure to age. Drinking range: 2023 - 2035 Rating: 97 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Feb 2021)

The 2018 El Escolladero is a single-vineyard bottling from a plot in the village of Ábalos. It's a blend of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from vines planted in 1950 on classical clay and limestone soils at 600 meters in altitude. The uncrushed grapes fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and the wine had an élevage of one year in 600-liter oak barrels. This is a little riper, earthier, perhaps a little more rustic than the La Condenada or Paso las Mañanas. This is a lot more open, expressive and aromatically advanced and a little rounder and softer. From the 2018s, the Locos and Escolladero are more Mediterranean, and the Mañas and Condenada feel more Atlantic (cooler climate). The tannins are silky and polished, fine-grained and round within that chalky texture. 1,200 bottles were filled in January 2020. Drinking range: 2020 - 2032 Rating: 95 Luis Gutierrez, www.robertparker.com (Oct 2020)

Artuke

These wines from Rioja are rooted firmly in their terroir. Artuke is all about small scale, biodynamic production: twenty two hectares of vines spread over thirty two plots between the stunning, hilly villages of Baños de Ebro and Abalos on the upper terrace of the river Ebro in La Rioja Alta, Northern Spain. Artuke is run by the family of Miguel Blanco, who have been working the land in this Northern part of Rioja Alavesa for over a century. Now, the helm is taken by Miguel's two sons Arturo and Kike de Miguel which as you might guess, is where the name 'Artuke' is derived from. The aim of the brothers has been this: To create a new and individual wine which still respects the history of the wine region and of their family wine tradition. The result: A thoroughly modern style of Rioja, but not heavily extracted or heavily wooded in style.
