2018 Chardonnay Glenelly Estate
Beautifully judged Chardonnay here. Lovely weight and perfect drive too - balance is very impressive. Great soft apple fruit and citrus bites keep it flowing with energy. Winemaker Luke puts whole bunches into barrel for natural, wild fermentation in 500-litre french barriques. It is then aged for 10 months in barrel (25% to 30% new oak). L&S (Apr 2020)

The Estate Reserve chardonnay displays a wonderful bright, crisp colour. The nose has tones of quince, citrus peel, lime and butterscotch caramel with hints of pear drop. The palate is lush, with poise and balance, vibrant citrus and mineral flavours leading the way to a long, round, textured finish.Winemaker's notes(Sep 2020)
(Editor's Choice) Pronounced aromas of toasted nuts, singed orange rind and baked apple lead the nose of this enticing and rich-smelling wine. The palate is medium in weight and offers more of those same ripe and spicy tones balanced by medium acidity. Glenelly Estate in the Idas Valley, Stellenbosch, is the home estate of May de Lencquesaing, previous owner of Chateau Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, Bordeaux. This is no retirement home, but an ambitious project to make serious wines in one of the Cape's most beautiful and best sited vineyard areas. May has recruited Luke O'Cuinneagain as winemaker, whose career includes Chateau Fieuzal, Angelus, Screaming Eagle and five years at Rustenberg before joining Glenelly. He is assisted by Adi Badenhost as consultant winemaker. There are three ranges of wine made at the estate. The 'Glass Collection'; premium varietals from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay. The 'Grand Vin': the signature blend of the estate, using Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, aged 18 month in oak barrels. 'Lady May'; the flagship wine made of the best Cabernet Sauvignon, aged 24 months in new oak.
