Oenologist Carlo Ferrini's estate, run by his daughter Bianca. Light bricky red. Lifted, scented, tangy red fruits with a herbal freshness. On the palate, grainy texture, extreme freshness and intense, vibrant, wild red fruit. Almost tart in its freshness. Very long and attention-grabbing. (JH) 14.5% Drinking range: 2023 - 2028 Rating: 17 Julia Harding MW, www.JancisRobinson.com (Apr 2023)

*Case price discount: Mix any 12 bottles of wine (or 9 litre equivalent) or 6 bottles of Champagne, Spirits, Sweet Wine or Fortified (4.5 litres) to get the discounted 'case price' for each bottle.

The purity of fruit is all here with strawberry, lemon-peel and floral undertones. Goes to cranberries. It’s medium -bodied with firm tannins and a bright, vivid and linear finish that keeps your palate clean. Rating: 95 James Suckling, The Wine Spectator (Jun 2020)

With its first vintage in 2016 Alberelli di Giodo's history began in Mount Etna with winemaker Carlo Ferrini. Eight small handkerchiefs of land, lying at elevations of 700-950 metres, that together make up little more than one hectare. Co-existing with olive and fruit trees, their precious, pre-phylloxera vines have survived for 80-100 years, all trained to the ancient alberello (bush training system), typical of Etna. Fermented and macerated in open-top steel vats, with gentle punchdowns but no pumpovers, the wine is at the palest ruby palette of ruby colour, with smoky and mineral character of Nerello Mascalese, full of restraint with pomegranate and wild strawberry fruit character. Super refreshing due to both lively fruit and acidity it shows chewy velvety tannins plenty of youthful on the palate. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030 Rating: 94 Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter.com (May 2020)

Alberelli di Giodo

Megastar winemaker Carlo Ferrini fell in love with the wines of Etna and the island of Sicilly over the course of numerous visits to this beautiful, sun-kissed island. He is a good friend and collaborator of the charming Gianfranco at the Le Casematte winery - this relationship led to his hunt for his own vineyard in the area. Finally the dream is realised - and 2016 marks the first vintage release of the new Alberelli di Giodo wine.

Carlo started this project in 2012, hoovering up some small plots of old (70-90 years old) bush-vine Nerello Mascalese, as and when they have been available, after 5 years Carlo has secured a total of just 1 Hectare of vines. They are all really high up the Etna slopes at nearly 3000m altitude. In fact so high they are out of the DOC Etna - which runs up to about 1100m! The wine is therefore officially a DOC Sicilia - but could not be more Etna in shape, feel and essence. This small-production beauty is only available in tiny quantities and is sure to be an instant classic. New listings don't come much more exciting than this.
