A single-vineyard wine from Baños de Ebro in the northerly Rioja Alavesa district, this is a superbly expressive blend of mostly tempranillo with graciano and a touch of the white viura. This beauty is a blend of Tempranillo, 20% Graciano and 2% Viura, aged in french oak barriques for 16 months. It comes from a vineyard of sandy gravel over a limestone subsoil. This gives a wine of depth and energy, the limestone gives the palate zip and ping and the ageing a lovely sheen. The fruit is beautifully integrated with damson and blackberry to the fore. There's a little spiced mocha chocolate creaminess and then some lovely rich tannins giving structure and grip to the finish. Drinking range: 2020 - 2030L&S (Jun 2020)

Finca de Los Locos is a co-fermented field blend of Tempranillo with 20% Graciano and 2% Viura from the Las Escaleras sub-zone of Baños de Ebro. Rich in limestone and comparatively cool for the village, the vineyard has produced a 2018 that is pithy, chiselled and "electric" in Arturo de Miguel's words, with fine-boned tannins, damson and blackberry fruit and a long, refined finish. Drinking range: 2023 - 2032 Rating: 94 Tim Atkin MW, www.timatkin.com (Feb 2021)

Artuke

These wines from Rioja are rooted firmly in their terroir. Artuke is all about small scale, biodynamic production: twenty two hectares of vines spread over thirty two plots between the stunning, hilly villages of Baños de Ebro and Abalos on the upper terrace of the river Ebro in La Rioja Alta, Northern Spain. Artuke is run by the family of Miguel Blanco, who have been working the land in this Northern part of Rioja Alavesa for over a century. Now, the helm is taken by Miguel's two sons Arturo and Kike de Miguel which as you might guess, is where the name 'Artuke' is derived from. The aim of the brothers has been this: To create a new and individual wine which still respects the history of the wine region and of their family wine tradition. The result: A thoroughly modern style of Rioja, but not heavily extracted or heavily wooded in style.
